Bowling 4 Eva plays at the 2023 New Jersey International Film Festival on June 2!

by Vanessa Tirok
published 2023-05-24

Situated in the wake of online chat rooms and JNCO jean culture of the early 2000s, Bowling 4 Eva introduces the audience to protagonist Christina— a depressed teen who passes the time under suicide watch by bowling. The 14-minute dark comedy, created by Aelfie Oudghiri, takes the surreal art of bowling alley animations and integrates it with the equally surreal, lonely world of a misunderstood adolescent.

Virginia Yearick’s amazing docu-fiction feature film Possum Kingdom premieres at the 2023 New Jersey International Film Festival on June 4!

by Al Nigrin
published 2023-05-23

Possum Kingdom - Virginia K Yearick (New York, New York) On a run-down family farm in South Carolina, three generations of white men kill time in living rooms, open fields, and shallow water. The boredom that comes from the relative comfort and the slow decay around them leads them further and further into casual destruction. The film is an unscripted blend of documentary and fiction. Starring a mix of first-time actors, non-actors, and people playing alternate versions of themselves, most of the story takes place on a run down family farm, and we are introduced to members of the community that surrounds it. It may serve as both a neutral window into a way of life as well as a personal dreamland heavy with sentimentality. 2022; 91 min. Here is my interview with Possum Kingdom Director Virginia Yearick:

A Spot for Frog & The Chosen One screen at the 2023 New Jersey International Film Festival on Friday, June 2

by Anita LaBelle
published 2023-05-22

A Spot for Frog directed by Evan Bode and The Chosen One directed by Elazar Fine, may at first seem like two short films that have nothing in common. Look at the difference between the protagonists alone; one is a non-binary teenager and the other is an adult Hasidic man. However, upon closer viewing, both films grapple with the age-old question of identity, and consider if we ever truly find a place to call our own.

An Interview with Shon on "Meet Cute", How Animated Films Are Created, Teaching in China, and Time Lapse Photography

by Gary Wien
published 2023-05-19

Inspired by the silent films of the 1920s, the animated short "Meet Cute" tells the story of a fateful day between two people waiting for the bus. This is truly a short film - just 2-3 minutes long - but it tells a clear story and features beautiful animation. The story, characters, animation, simulations, compositing and titling was all created by Shon (Shawn Patrick Tilling) to capture the feeling and charm of the silent film era. Sound design was created by Siddarth Sadashiv. The film will be screened at the New Jersey International Film Festival on Sunday, June 11, 2023 at 7:00pm along with the feature-length film Stargazer. Both will have an in-person screening on the Rutgers University campus and available on demand for 24 hours starting at midnight.

An Interview with D. Mitry about "Hedgehog"

by Gary Wien
published 2023-05-18

One of my favorite films being screened at the 2023 New Jersey International Film Festival is Hedgehog, a powerful short film by D. Mitry about a family uprooted as war breaks out in Ukraine. The film is available on demand for 24 hours on Sunday, June 11th and will have an in-person screening in the movie theater on the Rutgers University campus at 5:00pm that night along with the full-length documentary Reading is LOVE: Fathers for Early Childhood Literacy.
