Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...9/18/25

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 09/18/2025

"We come from Finland, we are all from Helsinki, the capital city," stated The Rasmus front man Lauri Ylonen  as he discussed the band's newest release, origins, songwriting and more. "We met a long time ago at school, we were 15 years old when we put the band together and that was about 30 years ago. So, it has been a long career for us, this will be our eleventh album, there have been a lot of things happening during those years but fortunately we are still together and only two of our members have changed. We have two original guys, me and the bass player and we're excited about The Rasmus for 2025."

"Weirdo" was released last week via Better Noise Music and the very next day the band left for an extensive European tour. Being from Finland, one might think that a tour such as this is practically in their back yard but apparently, they are more popular in another backyard, one that is halfway across the globe.

We just recently signed with an American label which is great news for us," began Ylonen. "We signed with Better Noise Music who have a great reputation, especially in America with Rock music and we are very excited about this opportunity. We will be coming to the U.S for the first time in 16 years, we didn't have a proper release during that time, so now, Better Noise has caught us and things now make more sense, so we hope to make this up to our U.S. fans. The album came out on September 12 and we left for Europe the next day and we'll be touring mostly Europe until Christmas and also Mexico. So, I don't think we have time to come to the U.S. now, not even to party for one night (Laughs), we are so busy but we can always have a party later. We are looking into some options about touring in the U.S. in the early Spring so that will be great. We have a large following in Mexico, we're playing quite big arenas in Mexico in their three biggest cities. We played in Mexico for the first time in 2003 and almost every year we have gone there; it's pretty wild. I think Mexico is our biggest market; we are always asked, "Why is that?"  I don't know, maybe it is because we are so kind of different from those people and every time we go there, we obviously find it very exciting but I think they feel the same about us. We go there and being from Finland, we talk about the Northern Lights and snow and pine trees and whatnot and they are like, "Tell us more!"

Ylonen is not only the lead vocalist but also the group lyricist who says that he has a wide range of influences, even going as far as to compare himself to a beloved sea creature. These influences have not only played into the material he writes but are key to the album and its title as well.

"I am the singer and also the main songwriter, the album has 10 songs but we wrote 25, it's always good to write more than what you need. I have so many ideas and I want to try different styles; our thing has always been combining different music styles. So, it's not only like rock, now we've combined maybe some elements from metal, pop or even classical. I've always had a very wide range in my music tastes so I kind of let myself get influenced by everything all the time. I'm like a sponge, I suck in all these ideas and then they come out in a shape and that is kind of The Rasmus sound. It is good to do a lot of songs because some may not turn out so good or they are the wrong type for the album because we like to make concept albums and this time the concept and the name of the album is "Weirdo" and we wanted to find songs that sort of fall into that category. "Weirdo" has been around my whole life and when I was a teenager, it was more like an insult. People would call me a "Weirdo" because of the way I was looking, I had crazy colorful hair and whatnot and I've sort of carried that weight my whole life but I never changed myself, I've always kept my style and my own ways and now 30 years has gone by in this band, reached millions of people and made so many fans who like us the way we are, we're weirdos (Laughs) and it feels good. I just wanted to put that out there as an example that you don't have to follow the book or be like everyone else to be having a good life. So, just trust in yourself, be yourself, be who you are, that is kind of the message. So, we want to bring back the word "Weirdo" and instead of it being an insult, have it be a compliment or something like that."

"There actually is a song called, "Weirdo" which was the first song to sort of qualify to be on the album," he continued. "We felt like, oh, this is a good one, this is resonating deep and I found that it was really the story of me and my life. It's kind of saying, I could have been a preacher, a soldier, I could've been someone important or great in life but instead, I just became this musician dude. It's sort of ironic like, "I'm just a weirdo, I'll never be a hero" which I actually mean the opposite because I've done some incredible things in this life. I've made so much music that has made so many people happy and helpful; things like, we just played in Ukraine two months ago at a charity concert. We were the only international band to be there, we raised almost a million Euros for charity and cheered up 60,000 people in the middle of a war. So, I was pretty heroic and I was really proud that a weirdo like me could do such a thing."

As was mentioned prior, Ylonen is the band lyricist but he does have a "Mentor" of sorts who he pens songs with rather regularly.

"I was the only band guy who was writing the songs but I had help from my friend Desmond Child who is a legendary songwriter who has written songs for Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, KISS, Alice Cooper and many, many great acts; in fact, a lot of the stuff I was listening to growing up were his songs without me knowing he was involved. I had the pleasure to meet him back in 2007 for the first time when all of a sudden, out of the blue he emailed me and said, "This is Desmond Child and I would like to work with your band" and I was like, "Whoa! This is incredible that this living legend wants to work with us, a small band from Finland?" So, it has been really great. I've become very close with him because we've been writing a lot of songs but it's also on a family level. He is the godfather of my daughter and I've spent a couple of Thanksgiving dinners at his table; he's much more than a songwriting buddy for me, he's also my mentor and something like a father figure, he is amazing. We have this tradition, we go to Greece, he loves Greece. He has gone there like 20 times in the Summer and I have joined him and his family like five times to write songs and spend time. We mostly work and write music on this very nice isolated Island about a four hour boat ride from Athens; it's a magical place, we have done many songs there."

The Rasmus has been together for roughly three decades with very little turnover in personnel; the most recent being a new guitarist approximately three years ago and the other, a new drummer 22 years before that. Ylonen definitely realizes the importance of continuity as well as, "Chemistry" in a unit's makeup.

"We are a four piece band; me, my friend Eero Heinonen who is the bassist and has been a friend of mine from school since the third grade, we were like 10 years old. We had our first band together, he already played the bass and I was playing drums at the time and we played some cover songs. Our drummer, Aki Hakala joined us 22 years ago. He has always been the "New guy" until our new guitarist Emppu Suhonen joined us like three years ago. So, we've had two members change and those changes, I have to say, have been wonderful. With all due respect to the previous guys, sometimes it's so much about the relationships and the chemistry. A good band needs to have that as a good base to start making music and touring because you're spending so much time with each other and if you don't get along or at least have almost the same values or don't sacrifice as much for the band, it can be trouble. I think now, we have found perfect balance in the band and Emppu, the new guitarist, when she joined us, she brought back the joy of playing and the joy of being; she is a wonderful personality as well as guitarist."

Like most prolific songwriters, Ylonen already has an eye to the future.

"I'm always thinking of the future, I know we just released this one but I already have 10 songs in the pipeline ready to go (Laughs). That's how it goes, I love to write songs, it's my passion, it's the best part of this whole thing; creating something new and sort of reaching out to the future or somewhere unknown and kind of being the dreamer, I just love that. Now that the album is out, we can focus on touring Europe this year, hopefully a lot in the U.S. next year and we will be playing Australia for the first time in January, I think it is and that's awesome. I keep telling myself, "I deserve this (Laughs) because I put everything on the line, sacrificed everything and every one; it's not easy."
