Ask anyone involved in the Progressive Rock and most will readily admit that getting gigs is not always the easiest thing to do due to the nature of the music itself. Prog music and its fans are often very cerebral and with lengthy songs combined with odd time signatures and elongated jams; many clubs and venues aren't keen on opening their doors for those who perform in the genre for various reasons. That said, Schenck says that is only part of the issue and after their long layoff, a different type of roadblock has emerged.
"It is difficult to get gigs because in so many places now in Texas and Oklahoma for sure but I've talked to people in New York and California, so many venues are wanting either cover bands or tribute bands now. The tribute band thing is huge, one of our guys plays in a David Bowie tribute band on the side and it's a big thing. We have been doing some shows, we played an art studio in Beaumont, Texas and then for the album release on May 23, we actually played the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame. Oklahoma is the state we all originally met in and started the band in '89 and we got the opportunity to go back and play the Hall of Fame and we did a two-hour concert of 20 songs and released the new album that night. The shows we're getting are going great and we are looking for more and we're talking to people right now but yeah, it is a hard sell that's for sure."
When jokingly told that perhaps they should consider going out as a Pangaea tribute band since they've been on hiatus for so long; Schenck laughed loud and hard; apparently, it has crossed their minds before.
"We talked about that in the studio," he laughed. "Our producer Robert Berry said, "That's not a bad idea; what if we take one of the song titles from off the first album like "September Park" and say, hey, we're September Park, a Pangea tribute band?" The truth is, I tell people I play keyboards in Pangea and they're like, "I think I've heard of you guys" and I'm like; really? We get that so much that we're like, maybe we should be a tribute band. We'd probably get more shows that way (laughs) but I'll tell the guys that the cool guy I talked to today said the same thing we've talked about; that's funny."
Armed with a new album, a great producer in Berry and a fresh beginning; what is the album like? Is it a concept album like many others in prog rock? Straight ahead rock or some sort of combination?
"The album is seven tracks, about 40 minutes and kind of an old school album like Rush or Zeppelin or somebody would've done. A couple of the tracks are about nine minutes long, there's one track that's only two minutes long, so it's kind of everything in between. It's not really a concept album, one of the songs called "Wasape" which is about a nine minute song is tied into the album cover and the title "Beowulf." "Wasape" is a Cherokee word which means, "Bear" and "Beowulf" is an Anglo-Saxon word and poem that also means bear; "Be Wolf" and it's all kind of tied in together but it's not really a concept album per se`, it's seven unique songs.I will say that we've had some reviews where people have kind of seen a concept and they've made one. I think it's kind of cool if the listener hears that and they want to go with it, that's awesome if they're making those connections but we didn't really set out to do that."
"I'm the primary writer," he continued, "Andi my brother our drummer, two of them are his and one is the singer's Steven Osborn's. Everybody jumps in to help each other, I brought four to the table on this record but some of the guys have writing credit because they brought a lot of fresh ideas into what I already had. Historically throughout the albums, I've written the most but everyone does bring something else in, we all contribute. Even if I or Steven Osborn write a song, everyone helps in the arranging process or comes up with a chord change or the bass line may be something the bassist thinks of, so yeah."
Were the members all progressive rockers? What influences the band's material?
"Everybody definitely brings their own backgrounds and that's really diverse. When we all met, one guy was into Country, one was into Blues, one was into Heavy Metal; as far as Prog goes, for me, in 1982 I was a 12 year old kid and I heard Asia. "Only Time Will Tell" came on MTV and I was like, wait; what's this? This doesn't sound like a lot of the bands I'd heard, the changes were different and somebody said, "You need to see where these guys came from," I didn't know that was a thing because in 1982 there was no internet. So, I started digging around and Asia opened that door to Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, King Crimson and man, that was like this gateway to heaven for me to that music; so, that was my bridge into it."
Long layoffs where "Life" kind of gets in the way can change attitudes, like/dislikes, create different perspectives or other changes in philosophy but there is always magic left in the proverbial hat when old band mates reunite. Schenck says when it comes to recording or playing live, he favors one only slightly more.
"I think for me, it's kind of two-fold. One was getting the original band back together, it had to be that. I love these guys, not just Andi because he's my brother but they are all like brothers to me. I love the studio but I think the others all like the live shows better; you can ask them, I could be wrong but I like the live show too, I love the interaction with the guys on stage and with the audience but I love the recording studio. So, for me, that process is a blast. I like getting in there and taking a song where sometimes it's pretty much what we walked into the room with and other times you change things; somebody makes a mistake and you go, "Whoa, that mistake is better than what we thought of" so you keep it (laughs), you just never know. I love that part of the process, working with the producers and the engineers, trying some funky new keyboard sound or weird microphone technique; I love that stuff."
Along those lines, bands can get very creative in the studio, sometimes more than they should, which can create some difficulties recreating certain songs during a live performance. No worries here, they rectified that situation very quickly.
"The five of us were playing, we were rehearsing, the album was done and a couple of months into rehearsals we were like, we can't cover all of these parts; who is gonna play that guitar part? Everybody was like, I'm already doing this and another was like, I'm already doing that. So, we started talking and decided that we needed to get somebody else into the room. We had a short list of three people we knew and we wanted a guitar guy who could play keyboard and we went with Scott Draughon and he's been playing with us since October; so, now there's six of us."
Now that the record is out and the Summer festival season well under way; what are their plans to promote and or market their new material and will there possibly be a follow-up?
"We actually are in contact with someone to possibly open for; I'm not allowed to say at the moment in case it doesn't go through and also some mini tours around the states primarily in Texas and Oklahoma because that's where we are but we're also looking at Progressive Rock festivals and psychedelic festivals on the East Coast, the West Coast and all around the states and things of that nature as well. We've got a lot of ideas floating around, so we do have a lot of music; all of us want to do it again so there will be a follow up.We plan on playing shows, keep trying to market it by doing these interviews, we're getting reviews from around the globe; we were told by a couple of radio stations that we actually have radio play in 168 countries right now. So, we're getting a little bit of play on internet radio and underground radio here and there but we want to play shows and keep it going. We love playing together, that's the goal; we just want to keep getting the music out there."
