Carol Hamoy, Exodus, 2008 (22" x 39" x 2.5") The story of the Exodus from Egypt told in one sentence. "The Jewish people left Egypt as slaves, lived in the desert for forty years and entered Canaan as free people."
(TEANECK, NJ) -- Temple Emeth's Jewish Experiential Museum is delighted to announce its upcoming exhibition, Carol Hamoy: Alternative Histories showcasing the evocative works of artist Carol Hamoy. The exhibition opens on Friday, October 23, 2026, with a reception following Shabbat services that begin at 8:00pm. On Sunday, November 15, beginning at 1:00pm, Hamoy will give a presentation focusing on the trajectory of her work.
Carol Hamoy: Alternative Histories presents a compelling collection of mixed media artworks celebrating Jewish traditions while also critiquing and reclaiming Jewish practices, ritual, and gender roles from a feminist perspective. By constructing works about Jewish women and women’s issues, Hamoy calls attention to the the accomplishments and importance of many frequently forgotten histories. Her use of fabric, lace, and articles of clothing recall the memory of her immigrant family’s participation in the garment industry. By reaching back into history, she honors their history.
As a storyteller and an educator, Hamoy presents an account filled with the adventures and accomplishments of women, many of whom are virtually unknown. Her works are explorations of tradition and identity. The exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the complexities of the feminist Jewish experience in an effort to reconcile Jewish law and feminism.
Viewing of the exhibition is by appointment, by calling the Temple office during business hours at 201-833-1322. More information can be found on Temple Emeth’s website at www.emeth.org
Carol Hamoy is a mixed media artist living and working in New York City. Her work is included in several permanent collections and has been featured in many solo exhibitions both nationwide and internationally.
