Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites... 10/01/2026

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 10/01/2026

What do you call a rocker by night who pays tribute to multiple classic rock bands and someone who has done children's music during the day? You call him Paulie Z that's what.

Paulie Z has found success at what some may consider opposite ends of the spectrum but this New York City born talent has achieved much of it in both and prepares to bring his recent production, a tribute to Aerosmith called Aerowings to Pitman's Broadway Theater on October 9.
As someone whose former band ZO2 toured with Poison and KISS who later went on to front the band Sweet, Paulie Z has broken through barriers wherever he has gone.
Recently, he spoke about his past, the upcoming show, his late brother, the bands and his ability to morph into all of them.
"I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, I'm the oldest of three boys," he started slowly. "Our middle brother David Z and I were in a rock band for 10 years called ZO2. We had a TV show called "Z Rock" on the Independent Film Channel for two seasons and we also did children's music professionally together under the moniker "The Z Brothers." So, my whole career has been centered around rock music and children's music and I started a non-profit foundation a while ago and changed the name to "The David Z Foundation" in memory of my brother; he was killed in 2017. He kind of was the one who inspired me to do different things and always push the envelope even though he was younger than me he always liked trying things. He loved dressing up and challenges. So, he kind of pushed me and that's why I am the way I am now because I love challenging myself and doing different things. So, since I moved to L.A. from New York; after I did the TV show and ZO2, I hosted and produced a show called "Ultimate Jam Night" at the Whiskey A Go Go for pretty much seven-and-a-half years every week if you can imagine that, every week for seven-and-a-half years. I curated this jam that was a mix and match of professional musicians, celebrities and up and coming musicians in this unrehearsed but curated jam. That put me back in the spotlight on the West Coast. I was known on the East Coast but then when I came out here it kind of put me right in the center of the music industry and from that I was called to sing for the legendary glam band Sweet and I did that for three years. All of this time, I always continued to do children's music and my own original music but the thing that really took off was after Sweet I started doing tributes. I'd done them before, I was in one of the biggest KISS tributes called "KISS Nation" years ago back in New York but I hadn't done it in a while. Then when the Queen movie came out, there was a demand for Queen bands and someone asked me if I could put one together, so I did. I was so good at it (Laughs), I didn't even know I would be that good and the guy said, "Dude, you should consider doing this because you'd do really well" and he was right! Bohemian Queen has become my bread and butter and we are one of the top Queen bands I'd say worldwide or at least in this country for sure and from there I just started branching out. I started a Zeppelin band, a Deep Purple, then Journey, then a Chris Cornell and you name it. I just keep starting tribute bands, I just love it so much (Laughs)."

A multi-faceted talent, Paulie Z feels he got it from nowhere strange as in "Order for something to grow, it has to have strong roots" and according to him, his roots are why he is who he is.

"My father is a bass player and he had a band with his brother who was a singer guitar player; funny enough, he and his brother had a power trio with an Italian guy on drums named Joe and ZO2, the band that put me on the map was my brother and I with an Italian drummer named Joe; actually it was Joey Cassata who is playing with Twisted Sister right now. So, it was really my dad, my father's side of the family. His parents also sang, not professionally but it was enough and my dad was a music lover who would buy thousands of records, he had quite a record collection. We used to play, he had his bass and we'd play music together. So, all the music and art; I went to art school, all the creative stuff came from my dad and my people skills, that for sure came from my mom which is I think why I am so good on stage as a front man. My dad is a musician but he's not a people person, he has a few select friends but would prefer to stay home and my mom makes friends with everybody. So, when I'm on stage, I think her people skills and charm comes out and my father's creativity and love of music comes out and it happens to be a great combination. My brother David was also a bass player, he played with Trans-Siberian Orchestra from day one for about 18 years and he played with Joan Jett, he was in our band and so it was a very family oriented thing. Music is in the blood, my parents come to all my shows and every time I start a new tribute band they are right there cheering me on."

Having success in an original band as well as in the children's genre would be enough for some but "Z" is always looking for more, for that "Challenge" to be better and go farther and after the show on October 9, he'll be right back in the same venue on October 10 doing a different tribute to a different artist and yes, he does have help with the process but with his diverse roster, how does he decide what acts to pay tribute to?
"I have a partner Glenn Jost who started the Queen band with me and we started our company Zenn Entertainment but he focuses on Queen and kind of lets me do all the other stuff because he kind of knows that's my thing. I started Aerowings almost two years ago, it's one of my newer projects but it's doing really well; we just played in Arkansas and sold out and for a band that doesn't really have a real following yet because we're still developing it but because of my social media and because people see the business model and see me doing this other stuff and they're like, "Oh, I want to see him do Aerosmith, that should be interesting" and it has worked because people come and say, "I saw your Queen band a couple of times and I was intrigued. I want to see how you do Aerosmith." That's kind of the idea, then they come back the following year with a different band and they're like, "I've seen him do other bands and want to see him do..."

"Certain bands are bands I grew up loving, for example Deep Purple. That's not a band that's easy to book, they're not as popular as say Queen or Journey so that's more of a niche but I love Deep Purple. So, for me, there is a passion there to do it for that reason and then there are other bands that I do; the night after Aerowings at the same venue in Pitman, I'm doing my Springsteen band, The Z-Street Band. I didn't even like; I would say I disliked Springsteen most of my life, he's not an artist I listened to, I didn't even like him. Then as I got older and was exposed to him and learned it for various gigs here and there, I started to connect. As you get older, your priorities change, your view of life changes, the kind of movies, the kind of food we eat changes. So, I started to appreciate him and that's the exact opposite, that's the kind of group I did because it naturally fits my voice and my character. Queen too, I wasn't a huge fan, I liked them a lot but it just came so naturally, I was so good at it and I learned to love it and now I'm discovering these artists as an adult as if I was a kid which is great because I go, ooh, I didn't know that song, I didn't know that one and other bands I do just because I love the band. Alice In Chains, Aerosmith, Foreigner; other thing is I try to pick bands that I can do well. I know my voice, I know my range so I'm not gonna go out there and do a Prince or Johnny Cash tribute, that would be awful (Laughs). I happen to be a high tenor rock power singer as you can see the commonality with all those bands; everyone says I pick the most difficult singers in the world (Laughs) and in a way that's true, it's part of the challenge; can I do Journey one night and switch gears and do Chris Cornell the next night and Springsteen and Freddie or whatever. I use the same band except the Springsteen band drummer is a Jersey guy but yeah, I try to group the shows so that I can do double bills or two nights in a row for efficiency purposes."

Shall you be going to the Aerowings show, be prepared to flick your Bics and put your dancing shoes on as each set is an hour long and runs the gamut of material.
"Two one-hour sets with an intermission and what I try to do is capture as much of the catalog as I can which is not obviously doable because a lot of the newer stuff, people don't know and you are on limited time but I have a lot of the classic stuff, a lot of the '90s stuff; for my age, I'm a little younger than a lot of my contemporaries I play with so I missed the '70s and even the '80s because I was too young. So, when I was listening to music growing up it was "Pump" and "Get A Grip," you know, "Janie's Got A Gun" and that was my introduction to Aerosmith. The guys in the band are all 10 years older than me so they're all about "Mama Kin" and "Same Old Song and Dance" and the same with Queen but the point is that I try and capture all of that. We've got the classic stuff, the big hits of the '90s; I try to put some of the newer, at  least one or two in to round it out."

Today's environment is full of "Tribute Bands" some better than the original acts themselves; heck, even some of the original bands due to breakups, death or other reasons still tour with one or fewer original members (I.E. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Foreigner, etc) but Paulie Z sums it up rather well as to what he's trying to accomplish.
"At the end of the day, you have to decide whether you're gonna impersonate or tribute and that's fine if you are gonna do that and there are bands that do that or are you gonna interpret? There is a difference and when you go see  Aerowings, you're not gonna see me wearing a wig and copying every move he does but I'll do moves that are similar to his. I'll wear clothes that are similar like my leopard print shirt and a big hat with scarves on a microphone stand so that you get the essence of Aerosmith without feeling like someone is trying to be someone else and that's really the point of what I'm doing and I think people appreciate that honesty."
