Joshua Kaufman’s Things That Didn’t Happen shows a profoundly disturbed and troubled man getting interrogated about a car accident he is suspected of being involved in. The integration takes place in a retro room, indicated by the colors of the carpet and other decor. However, it is as if the viewer can smell the mildew smell through the lens. The atmosphere of the setting, along with the quiet voices from both the interrogator and the suspect alone, is all due to an overall sense of uncomfortableness throughout the 12-minute short film.

Fandango, portrait of an opera workshop, a film directed by Manno Lanssens, centers around the art of opera and emphasizes the importance of people singing in times of despair, as well as throughout their lives. The film features the talents of opera singing, and focuses on the teaching of Joy Bechtler, founder of the Operanauts, an organization founded to mentor people impacted by trauma and support their healing by teaching them the art of opera. The film emphasizes the interconnectedness of different forms of music, inspires the viewer by showcasing the talented singers who go through the program, and centers around the impact that the arts can have on people, including in times of hardship.

Modern dance, although not narrative in nature, conveys stories that go beyond verbal communication and straight to the heart of humanity. Rather than dialogue and voice overs, dance utilizes energy, emotion, and connection to the physicality of movements to tell a story. The audience does not need to be an experienced dancer to understand the message of a film. Through movement, feeling takes over, and understanding becomes its own dance between performer and viewer. Directed and choreographed by John Evans and Ani Javian, Breaking the Surface is a dance film that addresses the threat of global warming and rising sea levels, especially in New Jersey.

The 42nd Bi-Annual New Jersey Film Festival will be taking place on the Fridays and Sundays between September 8-October 8, 2023. The festival will be a hybrid one as it will be presented online as well as have in-person screenings at Rutgers University. All the films will be available virtually via Video on Demand for 24 hours on their show date. Each General Admission Ticket or Festival Pass purchased is good for both the virtual and the in-person screenings. The in-person screenings will be held in Voorhees Hall #105/Rutgers University, 71 Hamilton Street, New Brunswick, NJ beginning at 5PM or 7PM on their show date. General Admission Ticket=$15 Per Program; Festival All Access Pass=$100; In-Person Only Student Ticket=$10 Per Program. Fall 2023 New Jersey Film Festival Preview

(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) -- The Fall 2023 New Jersey Film Festival takes place September 8th through October 8th with screenings on Fridays and Sundays. The festival remains a hybrid one with in-person screenings at Rutgers University and films available via video on demand for 24 hours on the screening date. Nineteen films will have their New Jersey or Area Premiere (Middlesex County) screenings during the New Jersey Film Festival and the United States Super 8 Film and Video Festival.

With an impressive body of work spanning the course of three decades, John Cusack has evolved into one of Hollywood's most accomplished and respected actors of his generation, garnering both critical acclaim as well as prestigious accolades for his dramatic and comedic roles. He will take the bergenPAC stage to talk about his career after screening his 1985 comedy Better Off Dead.
