First Look Review - "The Quiet Ones"

by Eric Hillis, TheMovieWaffler.com
published 2025-02-26

You can tell a lot about a nation by its heist movies. British capers usually expect us to root for the criminals and possess an anti-authoritarian streak, with cheeky chappy working class heroes striking back at the establishment. American heist thrillers tend to be more moralistic, usually ultimately siding with law and order and portraying the criminals as trigger-happy sociopaths. France's heist movies usually focus on the mechanics of the heist itself, highlighting the ingenuity and professionalism of the men involved.

New Release Review - "The Monkey"

published 2025-02-24

WW Jacobs' 1902 short story 'The Monkey's Paw' might be the most influential work in the horror genre. In the century since its publication we've received countless novels, stories, plays, TV shows and films that riff on its "be careful what you wish for" template. New Release Review - "The Dead Thing"

by Eric Hillis, TheMovieWaffler.com
published 2025-02-15

The idea of falling in love with the undead has long been mined for cheap laughs in horror-comedies. With his directorial debut The Dead Thing, Elric Kane (known to movie geeks as a host of the Pure Cinema podcast) takes this idea and plays it straight, using the concept of being in love with a ghost/zombie for an exploration of earthly isolation in an era where we seem to be more connected than ever before, and yet there's never been so much loneliness.
