Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...3/30/23

Rock On! This Week

“I have an hour and a half of mostly acoustic style songs and I'm in the process of editing 15 music videos so, I am busy," laughed a jovial and excited Joe Bouchard as he discussed his upcoming show at Factory Records in Dover, NJ. "People keep saying, you should do more of your own solo songs so, that's what we did; it's a duo, it's myself on acoustic guitar and my girlfriend, my partner; she plays the Stratocaster. I do the singing and most of the rhythm and then she fills in the parts that need to be played so yeah, it's all good and I’m having fun.”

Bouchard rose to fame as a member of one of rock music's greatest acts; Blue Oyster Cult and with success such as that, there are stories; lots of stories. Currently, Joe is part of the Deko Entertainment family and it is they who have put together a series called, "Up Close and Personal" hosted by Frankie Hudak of which he is part along with others including, Carmine Appice, Dave Bickler of Survivor, Randy Jackson of Zebra and Vince Martell of Vanilla Fudge.

These events began in March with Appice and take place one or two per month through May. The setting is the aforementioned Record Factory in Dover which holds a capacity of 45; definitely an intimate affair. The shows start at 8 p.m. and Bouchard's appearance is scheduled for April 15; something he very much looks forward to.

“They asked me to do this and it sounds like a lot of fun," he began, "I've been getting prepped on it, getting a little set of acoustic style songs for this event; I'm not sure exactly how much question and answer it's gonna be but either way it'll be it'll be fun. It looks like a nice place; Factory Records and I'm looking forward to it. I’ve done similar things like this before but it varies; you know? Last year I did a lecture at a library that was mostly about songwriting but there was also a question and answer and that's always a lot of fun because you never know what they're going to ask sometimes. You know they're going to ask, because they all want to know about the classic old songs of the Blue Öyster Cult and that's fun to talk about. I always get a question about the cowbell of course, can't avoid that (laughs). So, I think it's best that I think of some good answers for those questions; you know? I also get to put in a lot of new stuff. I can't believe that I've put out two albums on Deko in the last three years and I hope to do another one very soon. I'm working on that as well as doing these videos and then sort of getting ready for a summer tour. I actually have the drummer that plays on my album, Mickey Curry is gonna be playing with me this summer at least on one show and if that works out, there may be several others. He's an amazing drummer, he's worked with Bryan Adams for many years and was in Hall & Oates but he's also worked with Cher and done an Alice Cooper album and he's now working with me as my live drummer. I'm excited about it but you know I like being able to just sit down on the guitar and talk about the songs and take questions from the audience. I cannot complain, you know for many years it seemed like I didn't do much but now it's like wow! I got sort of swamped with my history and the things that I like to do so, I’m happy about it.”

Bouchard laughs a bit when asked about stories from his past days with BOC and openly admitted when asked about the lack of spontaneous stage theatrics that at times are missing from today's touring acts that he finds technology exciting but enjoys mixing the old with the new.

“There are still those who still have a lot of tools in the rock business," he once again laughed. "I just did a show last weekend with Blue Coupe, which is my brother Albert and Dennis Dunaway and it was fantastic because the place that we played in Westport, CT has this incredible visual screen behind the band. Albert did do; just to add to the fact, Albert did do the Godzilla head during the song “Godzilla” and it was a big hit; it was amazing! The nice thing about it was that, not only was he wearing the Godzilla head but it was like 15 feet tall on this screen. So, we got to do it like a real sort of a Rolling Stones type show where they have close-ups of everybody and whatever solo they're playing. We had live cameras in the audience putting it all up on the screen and it was just mind boggling; not every show is exactly like that. I have been sort of dabbling in this visual aspect of shows for the last eight to ten years but this is the best one we ever did. So, I don't know, maybe I'll do that for my own solo band but you know one thing at a time. We are starting to get some bookings and we're heading out to Pittsburgh later this summer, we are doing some charity shows and we're doing a charity show in Vermont and that's going to be a lot of fun. So, yeah, I can't believe how busy I am; good thing during the pandemic, I was able to get a lot of recording done during that time.”

Along those lines, when asked about the age demographic and length of the event, he laughed aloud when asked if the set was around an hour or less.

“That sounds good! We'll keep it to that and I'll tell them you said so,” he replied with a huge laugh. “That sounds good, a 45-minute set. I’m not sure yet; it may be split it up but I'm always more comfortable with the guitar in my hands playing a song than talking to an audience but I'm ready for whatever the situation is. We play for all ages but I try to get more young people to come to the shows but they have another agenda. They seem to be more into video games and Hip-Hop but if they want the real thing; come to my show! There’s going to be some good music in this for all and just about anything else you may want to know.”
