"I had a three centimeter mass in the middle of my throat so getting that out of the way has really opened up my voice. I can sing things now that I couldn't dream of singing before I had the surgery. So, it has been a good thing and ya' know, sometimes the universe puts you where you belong and the new line-up of the band; we sound bigger and more ferocious than ever. I think everybody is where they need to be and I've got my health thing taken care of; the first surgeon I saw said, "I can do the surgery but I can't guarantee you'll be able to do anything above a whisper" and I thought well, that's not really what I wanted to hear. So, through our bass player's mother-in-law, who is a heart doctor, I got a recommendation to a specialist who focuses on removing thyroids and nothing else and it was a totally different situation. She said, "I've done surgery on singers before; one guy in particular sang the National Anthem at a ball game a week later." So, with Doctor Quillo at Louisville, I felt more confident so she is the one who ended up doing the surgery. There were tentacle-like projections that were going around my vocal chords and so she had to go in there and scrape those things off painstakingly; it was supposed to be a three hour surgery and it wound up taking seven. I was very lucky to have someone who knew what they were doing in there."
Currently, although taking the "Release singles first" approach, Otis has two full length albums prior to this latest phase of their career. Froggett says that this approach is kind of a reminder that the band is still around and very viable.
"We have two full-length albums out. Our first one was, "Tough Times: A Tribute to John Brim" in 2014 produced by Greg Martin of The Kentucky Headhunters. John Brim was a native Kentuckian who grew up around the Hopkinsville area and moved to Chicago in his teens and ended up on the Chess record label along with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter; all of the blues greats that we love. So, we wanted to take some of his music and kind of shine light on Kentucky's blues heritage. So, it was our arrangements and his lyrics is the way we did it and that's the album that got the attention of Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Our second record was, "Eyes of the Sun" and that was on Cleopatra Records in 2017, produced by Paul Nelson who was known for being the long-time manager of Johnny Winter. We enjoyed working with him, he managed us for a time; we learned a lot from Paul, he was a great guy. We've got the two singles out and we're gonna release more. We haven't quite worked our way up to getting a full-length release out yet with this line-up. So, these singles are kind of like, "Hey! We're back in the game" sort of thing and we're working on a new record deal to get a full-length release out there but things have been really good, we've gotten to play some really cool places this year. We played The Iridium in New York City, which is always an honor; that was Les Paul's hangout when he was still around. You go there and see pictures where Mick Taylor and Charlie Watts played there; that was a big honor for us. The reception of the single has been great. Joe Bonamassa added us to two of his Spotify playlists, "Cutting Edge Blues" and "Cutting Edge Rock," we were featured in "Tracks of the Week" in "Classic Rock Magazine" and as it stands, we've got over 27,000 streams on Spotify on this particular song. So, things are going well and that means you can look for more releases. more touring and more Otis. We'd love to get a full-length record out by 2025 and as I said, we're still trying to get a deal mailed out to get a full-length out there; hopefully it will happen next year. The way we like to listen to music is in album form. Releasing singles is great because each song gets a lot of attention but people are hungry for an album so that's our goal for sure."
Froggett mentioned Billy Gibbons and ZZ Top more than once; were they a large influence on the band and/or their sound?
"Absolutely, that's what we cut our teeth on," he said emphatically. "Rio Grande Mud," "Fandago," "Tres Hombres;" those were very important albums to us; the guitar tone especially has been a guiding light. There is nobody who can make an amp do what Billy does and so he was a very big influence and it turned us on to a lot of different tuff. By listening to ZZ Top, Canned Heat, the Allman Brothers is really how we discovered the blues.because you go through the track listing and there's John Lee Hooker, there's T-Bone Walker; we started to chase down the roots of this music and more times than not, figured out that we liked the originals better than the re-imagined versions. That was a good way to learn about the blues; growing up and being younger guys, we listened to the blues backwards. We picked up on Stevie Ray Vaughn and The Fabulous Thunderbirds first and then go back to Clapton and Cream and then back to Muddy Waters and it just keeps on going."
Seemingly all on the same page and with two new additions; is there a principle songwriter?
"We write as a band and that's what really works for us. The four of us get in a room and start jammin' and an idea forms. We'll take our time with it, we'll come up with something and say, this is cool and then we'll revisit it and then otther songs just kind of write themselves; we've written songs in a 10 or 15 minute time frame but it seems like if I try to write separately or bring an idea in, it takes a different form when the other guys start playing on it. So, it's almost better to just go in with a clean slate, start jammin' with the guys and see where it goes."
Froggett is also very optimistic about the bands future based on the reception of the singles, recent gigs and their upcoming schedule.
"We played at Knuckleheads in Kansas City and September was kind of crazy with a lot of shows so, things are looking up."
