Makin Waves with Dave Vargo: Good Tunes 'n' Hearts

​​​​​​​Late to the songwriting table, journeyman musician Dave Vargo, who once toured extensively as a sideman, has established a great local solo career in the Asbury Park area. In the midst of recording his third independent album since 2016, Dave was honored by Makin Waves as the 2021 Songwriter of the Year based on the strength of two impressive singles: the pandemic anthemic “Half Bad” and the confessional “Fault Lines.”




 

Our Favorite Stories In Music: "It Goes Like This, The Peppermint Twist!" Spotlight on The Starliters' Joey Dee

New Jersey Stage published its 25,000th story in December 2021. As the site approached the milestone, we posed the question on social media as how we should celebrate.  One response was to highlight our favorite stories from over the years.  We liked this idea, but could not narrow things down to just 25 favorites so we will present a favorite each day from different genres. Every Monday we feature one of our favorite stories in music. This week's choice is an interview of Joey Dee of The Starliters by Spotlight Central.



Outpost in the Burbs Presents Hollis Brown

(MONTCLAIR, NJ) -- Outpost in the Burbs presents Hollis Brown on February 26, 2022 at 8:00pm. This concert will take place at the First Congregational Church, 40 S. Fullerton Avenue in Montclair. The band's latest new album, In The Aftermath (Mascot Label Group/Cool Green Recordings), is the deliciously depraved outcome of an all-night rock n’ roll riot. The Queens, New York-based quintet escaped to the Poconos to record with a few handles of whiskey, and, in one 24-hour session, ran down The Rolling Stone’s seminal first album of all originals, 1966’s Aftermath. Tracked live in the studio with minimal overdubs, In The Aftermath is potent proof the five-piece group is one of the last great American rock n’ roll bands. The band is expected to play songs from this album and from throughout their catalog.



Remember Jones to Perform "Bat Out Of Hell" Live at Axelrod PAC

(DEAL PARK, NJ) -- Remember Jones will celebrate the sound of Meat Loaf and the music of Jim Steinman with three performances of Bat Out of Hell Live at the Axelrod Performing Arts Center from April 29 to May 1. Remember Jones will perform the entire classic album from 1977 and more with a 12-piece band and special guests that include Max Weinberg and Low Cut Connie.

Asbury Park-based Alexander Simone & the WHODAT? Live Crew will rock their hometown Feb. 5 at What a Wonderful Year at the Wonder Bar and Feb. 12 at Langosta Lounge in support of their new Telegraph Hill Records single, “Even Now.”

“This is a one-off single, the song felt like it lived in its own bubble because of the environment that we are in now. I didn’t see this as part of a collection, this is almost like an album’s worth of ideas or music in one song for me and it really addresses the life we are living right now and I couldn’t really see any companion pieces for it; you know?”



Spotlight on Hallows Die

Hallows Die is a band from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.  They describe their sound as "progressive melodic death metal? We might be missing a few adjectives. We make noise; sometimes it sounds coherent, and sometimes it’s missing a beat." The Penguin Rocks presents this interview with Hallows Die.



NJ Festival Orchestra presents “Voices from the Arctic”

(WESTFIELD, NJ) -- NJ Festival Orchestra continues its triumphant return to the concert hall on Saturday, March 26 and Sunday, March 27 with “Voices from the Arctic,” presenting masterworks from Rautavaara, Sibelius, and Tchaikovsky in a passionate storm of ice and fire. The concert promises authentic Arctic birdsong, soaring Sibelius melodies with internationally acclaimed violin virtuoso Jaewon Kim and, arguably, Tchaikovsky’s finest and most heart-rending symphony. With David Wroe at the helm, live music doesn’t get much better than this! 



State Theatre and New Jersey Symphony present Casablanca in Concert

(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) -- State Theatre New Jersey and New Jersey Symphony present Casablanca in Concert with the New Jersey Symphony on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at 3:00pm at the newly renovated State Theatre New Jersey. The classic film will feature live orchestral accompaniment by the New Jersey Symphony, led by conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos. Tickets range from $39-$89. 



Alto Saxophonist Mark Gross: Inspired by Cannonball Adderley and Jimmy Heath

Cannonball Adderley was alto saxophonist Mark Gross’ “biggest influence,” so when he was hired by Cannonball’s younger brother, trumpeter Nat Adderley, in 1995 (20 years after Cannonball’s death), it was “one of the highlights of my career. I came recommended to him,” Gross recalled, “but he had not heard me play. We flew to Europe, and I’m thinking we are going to rehearse. We get to the hotel, we have dinner, and he says, ‘See everybody tomorrow.’”
