Our Favorite Stories In Film: The Opening Act

New Jersey Stage published its 25,000th story in December 2021. As the site approached the milestone, we posed the question on social media as how we should celebrate.  One response was to highlight our favorite stories from over the years.  We liked this idea, but could not narrow things down to just 25 favorites so we will present a favorite each day from different genres.  Every Wednesday will feature a story about film.  This week's choice is a feature on an independent fim called The Opening Act.

Hallucinations World Premieres at the 2022 United States Super 8 Film and Digital Video Festival on Saturday, February 19

published 2022-02-19

Hallucinations is a film by M. Wild that will be playing at the 2022 United States Super 8 Film and Digital Video Festival on Saturday, February 19, 2022. It begins with a dreamscape and a narrator who seems to believe themselves to be at one with the stars in space; at one with the atmosphere. The first character that is introduced to us is Ava Gastpunkt who appears to be a well-known photographer. She comes up periodically in the film after this moment, but what is important to note about this introduction is that the film is establishing the role of photographer as a particularly important one in the world of this film. It seems that Wild is interested in perspective, and the parameters thereof, where the camera is a particular tool that we use to make perspective into something tangible.

Tim Dubbert’s III. screens at the 2022 United States Super 8 Film & Digital Video Festival

by Loren Simon
published 2022-02-18

There once was a sailor who was shipwrecked on the treacherous black sea. The injuries he sustained had almost left him fatally wounded. That was until a woman had found him stranded and nursed him back to health but under unmentionable circumstances, she had no choice but to leave him behind. Many, many years later the sailor receives a letter detailing nine clues/rules that would eventually lead him back to his fateful love. Tim Dübbert’s nautical silent film III. captures the sailor’s journey and the arduous task of completing these steps. Dübbert is the sole director, producer, and filmmaker of this movie. Joined by his family and peers in Mönchengladbach, Germany: Chris Dübbert, Irina Dübbert, Luisa Dübbert, Stephen Erckmann, Klaus Fabian, Susanna Fried, and Damian te Beesen; the story of this unnamed sailor is brought to life. The thirteen minute submission to the 2022 United States Super 8 Film & Digital Video Festival was shot and animated entirely on Super 8mm film.
