In the very beginning of the cinema, most films were very short, running a minute or less. Before YouTube and TikTok there was the "short subject film," often shown with a feature film in a movie theatre. These days, aside from YT and TT, short films are platforms to get industry experience and showcase talent. That said, this art form has an intense and enthusiastic following among film fans.




 

State Theatre New Jersey and WMTR present Grease Sing-A-Long

(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) -- State Theatre New Jersey and WMTR present Grease Sing-A-Long in celebration of the movie's 45th anniversary on Saturday, August 5 at 8:00pm. The Grease soundtrack boasts several unforgettable songs, including "Greased Lightnin’," "Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee," "Summer Nights," the Academy Award -nominated "Hopelessly Devoted to You," "Beauty School Drop Out" and, of course, the eponymous title track "Grease."



2023 Newark Black Film Festival to Take Place July 12-16

(NEWARK, NJ) -- The 2023 Newark Black Film Festival takes place July 12-16 at The Newark Museum of Art. This is the longest-running Black film festival in the country and it celebrates films that appreciate the historic significance of the Black experience in the United States. The festival features late-night parties, live panel discussions, and exclusive screenings of films created in the last three years.

2023 New Jersey International Film Festival Winners Announced! All the works that were part of the 2023 New Jersey International Film Festival Competition were selected by a panel of judges including media professionals, journalists, students, and academics. These judges selected the 35 finalists which were publicly screened at our Festival. The finalists were selected from 711 works submitted by filmmakers from around the world. In addition, the judges chose the Prize Winners in conjunction with the Festival Director.

​​​​​​​Steven Hedrick Jr.’s A Thief emphasizes the fear-inducing aspects of religion and reminds us why religious texts should not always be taken literally. An elementary-school-aged boy, played by the adorable Tucker Grumbles, learns in church that he must always keep watch over his relatives because when he is least expecting it, they will be taken to heaven. From that moment, he fears the deaths of his loved ones nearly every moment of every day. He believes that if he can keep expecting the moment his family members might be taken (the “now”), then they will not die. However, this “expecting” game very quickly becomes all-consuming.

Dancing Without Steps: The Art of Improvisation with Margaret Beals by Adriana Davis and Margaret Beals. Join acclaimed dance innovator, Margaret Beals, in her exploration of the art of improvisation. In this short documentary, Ms. Beals demonstrates the power and authenticity of improvisation as performance and also as a tool of discovery for any creative endeavor. Throughout this film, audiences are offered glimpses of Ms. Beals’ extensive career in improvisational dance. One of the first solo dancers to perform whole concerts without steps, she started her early career in the free-wheeling atmosphere of the 1960's club and cabaret scene and continued her pioneering journey through five more decades. In this film, Ms. Beals draws from various artists to give fuller context to her thoughts on improvisation. Keith Jarrett, renowned jazz pianist, reveals insights into his own creative process. Meredith Monk, award-winning composer, singer and creator of music-theater-film works, gives an insightful introduction to this documentary as well. 2023; 25 min. Director Sophia Castuera’s film August at twenty-two is showing at the 2023 New Jersey International Film Festival on Friday, June 9th at 7 p.m. and online for 24 hours. Written and starring Ali Edwards, the narrative feature film details the post-graduate life of Cal, a floundering New York City actress who accidentally falls in love with her best friend’s girlfriend.



Wonderful feature Stargazer screens at the 2023 New Jersey International Film Festival on Sunday, June 11

Stargazer, a film by Alan McIntyre, truly delves into the idea about what stories get to be told, how they are told, and most importantly for the films case, who gets to tell them? The story follows Grace, an undergraduate student desperate to tell the story of a forgotten astronomer named Cecilia, whose accomplishments were stolen by men and never brought to light as her own. Grace’s journey to share this story is complicated by Spike, a journalist looking to make the story his own, and Diana, a dancer who brings context about Ancient Greece, power, and the role of women to men. These two complicate Grace’s point of view, and makes her choose which she thinks is right, as Diana says in the film, she has to choose whether to “Fuck the man or say fuck you to the man”. Throughout the film, Grace’s journey is a search for clarity, self-discovery, and to find what role people play in telling other stories, and these decisions and answers are all complicated by Diana and Spike’s opposing forces.
