They're usually played for laughs (Gemma Bovery), but sometimes for thrills (One Deadly Summer). With Misericordia, writer/director Alain Guiraudie mines this setup for both black comedy and even darker thrills, delivering a devilishly queer take on a Gallic storytelling staple.
