Rock On! This Week

"I'm doing real good today; it's a beautiful day here in Nashville. I just took a little walk around the neighborhood, the flowers are blooming, it's a no coat day and it looks like we are heading into spring."

So, said an upbeat Mary Gauthier as she was preparing to head north for a March 30, 8 p.m. show at the intimate confines of Monmouth University's Pollak Theatre.

With a new album, "Dark Enough to See the Stars" and a slight change in her songwriting style, Gauthier is ready to hit the road but according to her; that's a way of life.

"Honestly, I just play, I'm an old school troubadour and what I do is tell stories, sing songs, travel a lot and play," she began with an ever so slight bristle to her tone. "So, theoretically it is in support of the new record but it's just what I do and I'll be playing songs from all of the records that I've put out over the last 30 years. As a troubadour, large tours; I really don't even know what that means, we always work. It's not like the pop world where there is this giant announcement, "Bob Dylan's Spring Tour!" What we do is, fill the calendar with work, get in the car or get on a plane and go do the work and that's constant and always. There are no months where we don't do it; it's a job that I love and something that I love and is part of my daily existence. So, it's definitely cool to get back to New Jersey, it has been a while, I'm really excited to get in front of the audience there and I'm really looking forward to it. I don't know why it has been a while but it's been a bunch of years."

"COVID kind of threw a wrench in the memory," she laughed as she tried to recall the last time she visited the Garden State. "We live-streamed every week, I cooked a lot, had a garden and found that being at home was pretty awesome. I enjoyed being in one place, I'd never done that since I started; for 30 years I've never been in one place that long, most of us haven't, none of us have for goodness sake; who takes two years off?"

To better understand her work ethic, wanderlust and writing style; one only needs to check her roots and influences as well as how her process evolves.

"I was born in New Orleans, raised in Baton Rouge so I'm a Louisiana native," she started slowly. "I lived in Boston for a little over a decade and now I'm in Nashville and I've been here for 25 years. I didn't grow up soaking in Louisiana music at all, I grew up listening to the radio, Casey Kasem "American Top 40" and I always loved the singer-songwriters; Janis Ian "At Seventeen," Don McLean "American Pie," Elton John "Your Song, "Daniel," the singer-songwriters just had me and I've always loved lyrics. Then I became acquainted with the songwriters from Texas, Waylons and Willies and Townes and Guy and I just fit in that world as a fan and when I became a songwriter as a songwriter. When I first started doing this, I was going to open mics in the Boston area and modeling what I did after what I saw in the New England singer-songwriter folk world and at the time it was Cheryl Wheeler, John Gorka, Greg Brown, Shawn Colvin, Patty Larkin, Dar Williams, Patty Griffin still lived there at the time and all of these people were word based songwriters. Their lyrics were really important to what they did and that was the model for me and I went with it. I was already there anyway as a fan, I knew what I loved as a listener and that was the words."

"What comes first is an idea and then I have to execute the idea and I don't know how to flush it out and as I'm flushing it out I'm looking for words that fit into music and so the music and words kind of help me flush out this idea that is pretty ethereal in the beginning and I have to turn it into something."

The new record, her eleventh, was constructed in very much the same way; or was it?

"Dark Enough to See the Stars," is the same way I've done everything; just keep writing songs until I get 10 or 11 that I think are really good. I throw out a lot of songs if I don't think they are up to what I want to put in the world and I just keep writing until I get those 10 or 11 that I'm really excited about. A lot of these songs were written in the pandemic so, it has a little bit of that going on; it's a bit of a different record for me because there are upbeat love songs and I've never really written that way before and I had to stretch to do it. Generally for me, I use music and song to work through the hard stuff, I turn to the guitar when times are hard. I've never used it to try and capture joy; when I'm happy and things are great, I just want to be happy and enjoy joy; ya' know? This time, I was really committed to try and capture something I've never really sat down and tried to write, which is straight up love songs and for me, I think that was some growth and man; it's fun to sing'em."

Pollak Theatre will see Gauthier joined by the talented Jaimee Harris; something that she is absolutely thrilled about.

"Jaimee is my partner in music and in life. Jaimee is an extraordinarily gifted harmony singer; she accompanies me and opens the shows. She also has her own career as a singer-songwriter; she's a really great songwriter and we travel together and separately. Fortunately, she is going to be on this show; I want her on every show but she has her own career to tend to as well. So, when I get her, I get her and I'm always happy to have her because she adds huge energy to what I do. I've always been a solo travel alone troubadour modeled after the classic New England singer-songwriter thing and when Jaimee came along, it changed that for me and I've expanded into sort of a duo. Having her, first of all, it makes me happy and second of all, I think it adds a lot to the show. I still do a lot shows on my own, which I still enjoy doing very much but the dynamic of us together; I think is something special and I'm excited that she'll be with me at this show."
