Beloved Asbury Park two-piece Yawn Mower are returning home on Nov. 26 to celebrate the vinyl release of their long-awaited full-length debut album, “To Each Their Own Coat,” on the invaluable North Jersey indie Mint 400 Records. The locally loaded bill at Asbury’s House of Independents also will feature Echo Plum, Dentist, and Surf Haven.

After years of releasing nationally acclaimed EPs and singles on Mint 400, Yawn Mower’s long-awaited LP was supported by a fall East Coast tour that will conclude with the homecoming show. They’ll be sure to play three singles from “To Each Their Own Coat,” including the college radio hit “Elevation,” the Makin Waves Song of the Week.

As the Makin Waves Song of the Week, “Elevation” also can be heard between 6 and 8 p.m. on Nov. 25 on “Radio Jersey” at ThePenguinRocks.com. If you miss it, you also can tune in any time in the archives at The Penguin or MixCloud

Other recent YM singles are “Sixteen Minutes” and “Broken Filaments”.

Expanding the sound of vocalist-guitarist Mike Chick and vocalist-drummer Bif Swenson, the nine-song album was engineered by Evan Barnard, who’s worked with Asbury indie act Teenage Halloween, as well as Mannequin Pussy. Mixing was handled by Chris Baglivo (The Obsessives, Big Nothing), while mastering was by Ryan Shwab (Hop Along, Modern Baseball). Yawn Mower recorded “To Each Their Own Coat” at Big Mama’s (now Jamtown Recording) in Philadelphia, ByrdHouse in Manahawkin and Waving Cat in Asbury Park.

To capture the full, lush album, the two-piece also expanded live with Nick Gianatiempo and Donna Yurcisin of Grasser, Eric Friedman of Earth Telephone, singer-guitarist Pam Flores, and violinist Nicole Scorsone.

Jazz

Jazz at the Morris Museum: Bassist/Vocalist Thaddeus Exposé Celebrates the Music and History of New Orleans

The City of New Orleans, obviously, holds a mythical status in the world of jazz. The genre (or at least the form with which listeners are familiar) was invented and developed there, and every jazz musician – from the swingiest to the most avant-garde – holds at least some debt to the bygone inhabitants of the Big Easy. However, while the city is rightfully revered for its place in jazz history, its musicians tell a more complicated story.

A rock & roll lifer, James has been carving his unique path since the 1980s, when the New York City based, British-born singer/songwriter kicked off his career with a raw, soulful voice; a storyteller's sense of narrative; and the ability to blur the lines between folk, classic pop, and rock.
