Beyond What You See - Curatorial Notes by Yung C. Kang

"In Beyond What You See, Ferruccio Babarcich explores the possibility of form existing on its own terms, inhabiting a space between painting and sculpture. His work does not pursue representation or narrative. Rather than describing or symbolizing the external world, each piece quietly refers to itself. This approach reflects a sustained commitment to formal exploration that has remained central to the artist's practice since his earliest works.

Edges and transitional curves play a crucial role in Babarcich's work. They are not merely devices that separate one form from another, but quiet thresholds where relationships emerge. The spaces and intervals within the work are not empty; they become places where tension, balance, and coexistence unfold.

He searches intuitively for forms that resonate with him, refining surfaces, edges, and transitions until a sense of equilibrium is reached. What ultimately emerges is less an assertion than a presence one that feels closer — to sensation than explanation, and closer to silence than statement. Exploration itself remains essential to his artistic process.

The relief works in this exhibition occupy an ambiguous spatial condition. They lean against the wall without becoming part of it, and possess volume without aggressively claiming surrounding space. This "in-between" state is central to the exhibition. It suggests a mode of existence that resists domination or intrusion while sustaining the possibility of relation through distance and restraint.

At a time when much contemporary art emphasizes participation and immediate interaction, Babarcich's work instead invites slower observation and quiet attentiveness. These works do not perform or demand relationship. Rather, they hold the possibility of relation within distance, silence, and the careful awareness of form.

This exhibition can also be understood through the perspective of "the aesthetics of relationship." The forms neither merge nor collide; instead, they coexist within measured distance and subtle tension. The gaps and spaces within the work are not empty voids, but places where relation quietly resides.

What remains after viewing these works is less an image than a condition of perception: a slowing of breath, a softened awareness, and a renewed sensitivity to how separate forms—and perhaps separate lives—can coexist within shared space.

Ferruccio Babarcich studied Studio Art and Education at New York University, with an emphasis on painting and photography, and later studied Interior Design at Parsons School of Design. His work has been exhibited at Studio Montclair (2025), Sculptors Alliance in New York (2021), SOHO Photo, and in various solo and group exhibitions.

Look beyond what you see."
