First Avenue Playhouse presents "True West" by Sam Shepard
 

(ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ) -- First Avenue Playhouse presents True West by Sam Shepard across three weekends (August 17-18, August 23-25, and August 30-31). Brothers Austin and Lee seem like opposites. Austin is a hardworking scriptwriter and Lee is a homeless Thief. When a Hollywood producer picks Lee's idea for a 'true-to-life' western over Austin's script, the brothers turn on each other. A writing session gets ugly in this dark comedy.

 



"Romeo and Juliet" Comes to Perkins Center for the Arts in Moorestown in September
 

(MOORESTOWN, NJ) -- Exclamation Theater, Inc. presents William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet across two weekends in September at Perkins Center for the Arts in Moorestown. Shakespeare's classic play tells the story of two teenagers, Romeo and Juliet, who fall in love despite the hatred between their feuding families. They choose to marry secretly, but due to the family rivalry and circumstances beyond their control, they and others perish tragically.

 



Cape May Stage's Reading Series presents "The One Good Thing Or 'Are Ya Patrick Swayze'?" on Monday
 

(CAPE MAY, NJ) -- Cape May Stage's Reading Series presents The One Good Thing Or "Are Ya Patrick Swayze"? by Joe Bravaco on Monday, August 12, 2024 at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse. The event is free to attend (donations are accepted) and takes place at 7:00pm.

 



Centenary Stage Company to Hold Auditions for "The Weir" by Conor McPherson
 

(HACKETTSTOWN, NJ) -- Centenary Stage company, a professional not for profit theater company located on the campus of Centenary University in Hackettstown, will be holding an open call (AEA & Non-union welcome) for their upcoming production of The Weir by Conor McPherson. This production will be produced under an AEA SPT 4 contract, and both AEA members and non-union actors will be seen. Auditions will be held on Tuesday, August 27th from 10:00am – 6:00pm.

New Zealand filmmaker Roger Donaldson was a founding member of the Aussie/Kiwi New Wave of the '70s before succumbing to the lure of Hollywood in the '80s, as did so many from that movement. That acclaimed wave of films tackled such subjects as gender, colonialism and inter-personal relationships, often by contrasting "civilized" people against the rugged backdrop of untameable terrain. Though it's set in the US, the spirit of that antipodean movement lives on in Good One, the writing/directing debut of India Donaldson, daughter of Roger.

Jersey City Theater Center Awarded Grants from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts
 

(JERSEY CITY, NJ) -- On July 30, 2024, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts awarded more than $30 million in grants to support approximately 900 arts organizations, projects, and artists throughout the state. The grants were approved at the Council's 58th Annual Meeting in Trenton. Jersey City Theater Center received two grants totaling $124,440, with $25,000 earmarked for projects serving artists. This is the first time Jersey City Theater Center has received funding from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

 



Nonprofit Awards 40 Paterson and Passaic Students With New Bikes For Academic Excellence
 

(PATERSON/PASSAIC, NJ) -- The Boys & Girls Club of Paterson and Passaic (BGCPP) recently received 40 bikes and helmets from the Citi Bike Build. Bikes and helmets were given to four Club Kids at each of BGCPP’s 10 locations as a reward for perfect attendance and most improved grades during the school year.

 



Newark Alliance Unveils "Festivals United" Inaugural Event Programming
 

(NEWARK, NJ) -- Newark Alliance has unveiled the "Festivals United" coalition, comprising some of the city's premier annual events in the Arts and Education District and the Newark City Parks Foundation – Afro Beat Fest, Halsey Fest, Lincoln Park Music Festival, Newark Arts Festival, Newark Pride, and Newark Winter Village. This initiative, made possible by a $1.5 million grant from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) awarded in December 2023, marks a significant milestone in bringing together Newark's vibrant cultural offerings under one unified banner.
