One of the many seductive things about exhibitions like the New Jersey Arts Annual, on view at the Montclair Art Museum through January 5, 2025, is the glimpse it offers into Garden State lives. The painting that got me started on the map here was Janice Belove's "Road Trip."

It was in the late 1970s, during the anti-nuclear movement, that artist Helène Aylon noted how, in news photos of refugees, there are always images of women fleeing with a sack of precious belongings in one hand, a child clasping the other hand.

If you're a fan of the Marvel comic books or perhaps just the movies, you may want to venture to the Arts Council of Princeton to see their latest exhibit, "The Super Hero's Journey." It is on display now through December 7, 2024.



"Tradition" Art Exhibit Accompanies "Fiddler on the Roof" at Axelrod PAC

(DEAL PARK, NJ) -- Enjoy an evening filled with "Tradition" in both art and theater as Fiddler on the Roof is presented at the Axelrod Performing Arts Center, accompanied by a related art exhibit in the venue's Gallery on Grant. The exhibit, which runs through January 2025, consists of seven artists and one photographer and gives homage to the musical. Art Director Randye Krupnick curated this exhibit to mirror the storyline in Fiddler. Visitors will witness themes of life in Lithuania, cycles of seasons, cycles of life, photos of Israel and modern Op-Art created by an artist with Ukrainian roots.

Carmen Papalia is a visually impaired artist, and his compassionate brother Antonio Papalia "takes the cane for a walk" to accompany Antonio, who is sometimes self-conscious about using his cane in public.

The story of Raven and Fog Woman is a Tlingit legend that begins with two men fishing from a canoe. They encounter fog, from which a beautiful woman emerges to guide them to safety. Raven, one of the fishermen, falls in love with Fog Woman. She weaves a basket to carry fish.

The woman in the photograph wears a perfectly crisp blouse, skirt, and apron. Even the mending work on her lap looks freshly ironed—and mind you, this was several decades before the permanent press was a thing. The combination of polka dots, checks, and plaid on the statuesque figure projects a panoply of patterns with the screen door behind her.
