(ASBURY PARK, NJ) -- The ShowRoom Cinema presents the "Queer 90s" film series, a celebration of groundbreaking LGBTQ+ films from the 1990s. This special series will feature screenings of "Trick" on June 6, "Bound" on June 20, and culminate with a 30th anniversary screening of "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" on June 27, 2024. The final screening will also serve as a fundraiser for The Center in Asbury Park, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people living with HIV/AIDS.

The Affolter Brothers have created an utterly gripping and heart-wrenching documentary with Altona, a film that tells the story of a brutal murder that occurred in Canada in 1990. Having written, edited, directed, and done the animation for the film, these brothers clearly have a wide range of talent that is well used in filmmaking. The style is so assured, with the editing in particular keeping you engaged throughout, though with the story that’s being told, it's hard not to be on the edge of your seat for most of the runtime. The story unfolds as we hear about a man, Earl Giesbrecht, a teen at the time, who murdered another teenager, Curtis Klassen, and attempted to murder Tyler Pelke. Tyler and Curtis were best friends staying at Tyler’s home alone one night, when Earl arrived to commit an unforgivable act. This is where the documentary gets interesting, with Altona being such a faith based town, the film has a heavy theme of forgiveness, among the other themes of loss, destruction, friendship, and love.
The success of George Miller's first two Mad Max movies gave rise to a wave of knockoffs in the early '80s. Mostly Italian, these movies aped the post-punk petrolhead aesthetic of Miller's films, with Mohawk-sporting warlords crashing dune buggies into one another in the Spanish desert. While some of those movies were fun and provided cheap thrills for an '80s audience eager to feed their new VCRs, they lacked something. For a start they couldn't compete with Miller's craft, but there was another key element missing: they weren't Australian.

This year's ceremony took place live at the historic Count Basie Center for the Arts, attracting a capacity crowd for what has become the biggest night of the year for area high school thespians. All shows will take place beginning at 8:00pm in JSAC's Palaia Theater. The season lineup includes Willie Nile, John Gorka, Dan Bern, Catie Curtis and Band, Stephen Kellogg, Abbie Gardner, Heather Maloney and Band, and Kim Richey. As they have done in prior years, artists from the Asbury Park music scene will open many of the shows.

"Last year it was 35 years ago when Whitesnake headlined the legendary Donington Festival in England. So, we thought it would be a good thing to celebrate that anniversary and do a "My Whitesnake Years" tour and when we were done, people from all over the world began asking if we'd be willing to do a run here or there and we went to Scandinavia, Spain and there is actually more stuff in the pipeline for next year also and of course now to the United States and it has been a lot of fun so far."
