A graduate of the University of Manitoba's Bachelor of Music program (Vocal Performance with Distinction), Dewar will complete her Master of Music in Opera Performance at Montclair State University under Metropolitan Opera’s Barbara Dever next May.

The 1970s saw horror up sticks from its traditional setting of crumbling Gothic European mansions and move into a shiny new home in the suburbs and small towns of the US. Films like Halloween, The Fog, The Amityville Horror and Poltergeist brought the supernatural to a setting most viewers, especially Americans, could easily relate to. On the page, Stephen King was doing similar. In his 1975 novel Salem's Lot, a vampire literally relocates to small town New England. While King had several bestsellers and a Brian de Palma adaptation of his debut novel Carrie by that point, it was director Tobe Hooper's 1979 Salem's Lot TV mini-series that really made King a household name, and crucially, it introduced the writer's work to a new fanbase too young to have been able to see Carrie in cinemas. With one of its two central heroes being a monster movie obsessed young boy, it also set the template for '80s movies like The Goonies and The Monster Squad, which of course would later be channelled by Netflix's flagship series Stranger Things.

Even those who don't know very much about visual art are familiar with the Cubist approach to the human body. Pablo Picasso liked to present a person from many angles at once, and compress three-dimensional form into a two-dimensional frame. No matter what step she's on, that nude descending a staircase comes at us all at once. We know we're looking at an individual person, even if it's never clear which of those fields of color represent the present moment and which are afterimages, projections, and vapor trails. Representing human beings like this guarantees that there’ll be distortions: facial features in strange places, unexpected angles, duplicates and odd subtractions, clashes between heads, necks, and torsos, the shuffling of expressions, and the surprise and disquiet that comes when an obviously human figure doesn't look much like a human at all.
