South Camden Theatre Company Announces 2024 Season

originally published: 01/09/2024

(CAMDEN, NJ) -- South Camden Theatre Company has announced their 2024 theatre season. This year brings the company into their 19th season of producing professional, live theatre in Camden since being formed in 2005. Main stage productions for 2024 include Kill Move Paradise, The Toxic Avenger, and God of Carnage.

In 2010, the Heart of Camden, a neighborhood development non-profit in the Waterfront South neighborhood of Camden, built and donated a 6,000-square-foot theatre building to the Company. Today, that building stands as a testament to their 19 years of success. It has given them a beautiful, state-of-the-art home and allowed the company to build a patron base across the South Jersey and Philadelphia region.

For the 2024 season, they are bringing three main-stage theatre productions and two children’s productions. The first children’s theatre production is a collaboration with Triple Threat Theater Company, and the second is a theater production presented by Enchantment Theatre. These collaborations are being pivotal to meeting their goal of hosting as many Camden residents as possible at the theatre for both these family events and their main-stage events.

Their first main stage production is from Pulitzer Prize-winning and Tony Award-nominated Philadelphia-based playwright James Ijames. His play Kill Move Paradise will open the season on April 26 and run for nine performances through May 12. This show is directed by famed Philadelphia actor and director Damien J. Wallace. Kill Move Paradise is a powerful and satirical play. It explores stereotypes, fear, and the threat of death, which black men of all ages face every day. James Ijames stated, “This play contains a lot of pain, a lot of sorrow, but I hope it also offers my own community a space of healing and hope.”

New Jersey's first superhero takes to their stage next in a monster of a musical comedy. Based on the classic cult film, The Toxic Avenger, this ground-breaking premiere musical production was the winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical. The Toxic Avenger, the Musical is a charming love story and a laugh-out-loud fun show that has it all: an unlikely hero, his beautiful girlfriend, a corrupt New Jersey mayor, and two guys who play ...everyone else. This production is being directed by Joel Guerrero. He directed their highly acclaimed production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time last season. You won’t want to miss this musical production when it opens on September 13.

Their last production for the season is the brutally entertaining God of Carnage, a comedy of manners —without the manners. This show delves into human conflict and critically examines our human nature. This production is being directed by South Camden Theatre Company’s favorite female director, Ms. Connie Norwood. She is already turning this production on its head by planning a different approach to her cast. Ms. Norwood has directed shows including Suddenly Last Summer during season 7, King Hedley ll in season 10, By The Water in season 13, and most recently, Alabama Story in season 18. God of Carnage opens November 8 and runs through November 24.

The season was selected based on artistic director Dawn Varava’s take on the current political environment. She said, "America, as I see it, seems to be on pretty shaky ground. From gun violence to global warming to book-banning, to fascist rhetoric, we seem to have completely lost the ability for civil discourse and human connection. Theatre has always been a vehicle for exploring important, sometimes uncomfortable themes, and our 2024 Season will do just that."

A collaboration with the Triple Threat Theatre Company will bring The Lightning Thief to their stage for a limited run on March 1, 2, and 3 for four shows. This production is being directed by Triple Threat’s artistic director, Andy Boettcher, and has a cast of teens you won’t want to miss. Bring the family!
