Rock On! This Week

“It is a lot of songs that I’ve wanted to sing for a long time," says Irish folk artist Karan Casey as she arrived for her U.S. tour and prepares for an upcoming September 16 show at The Hopewell Theatre. "I have a Janis Ian song on there called, “I'm Still Standing Here” and a great Eliza Gilkyson song called “Man of God,” Patti Griffin; a Bob Dylan song which I've never done before so yeah, it's all good. I wrote a couple of songs on it and one is called “You are the Flower” which I wrote with Sean Og Graham who is actually on tour with me. I'll be on tour with Sean and Niamh Dunne who I've played with for all the best parts of eight or ten years but we've never done gigs over here in the States. So, I'm really excited about bringing them over here and coming to The Hopewell Theatre; it’ll be great.”

A native of Waterford, Ireland, Casey has performed with James Taylor, the Boston Pops Orchestra, Bela Fleck, The Dubliners, The Chieftains and many more since launching her solo career in 1999 and with this latest album titled, "Hieroglyphs That Tell The Tale (2018)" she openly admits that there is a passionate motivation in the content.

“I’ve always been politically motivated I suppose," she said somewhat reflectively, "I stand in that proud tradition of being a folk singer, many of whom use songs to make the world a better place. I kind of believe, that when you bring people together in a room of music that it offers us a different option and a choice and we can come together and trust and you can build trust in the room by singing together and through music but I think I've always believed strongly in that power behind music. I think particularly at these times where things are polarized and very difficult, we can have difficult conversations through song and I don't know, maybe hopefully come together and share our positions and our experience. I mean, that is what an artist is; a record of experience and other people’s experiences and trying to be more broad minded and open towards how other people live. I mean, that's what I definitely see the songs and the stories about; you know? I think that there's such a wealth of the narrative, it's almost like a parallel history of Ireland; let's say for traditional song that runs alongside the official history. It's a bit like how it is here in America, you know that there is more to the history because of people and emotions I suppose.”

Yes, however, being "Politically motivated" can put undo pressure on a songwriter or any artist; as what is the current hot button issue can be passe the very next day. How does Casey keep her subject matter up with the times in an ever changing climate?

“I suppose that is one of the tricky things about the more political or prolific songs is that politics change or events change," she explains, "Actually, the politics actually don't change I suppose. So, what I try and do is write kind of a more universal theme song that can resonate because a good song is one that's going to stand the test of time. I don't have any quick easy answer to writing, it's a mixture of myself that I find more enjoyable than if I ride to work every day. I think it brings the best results and I'm not one of those people who; I’ve written one or two songs that came easily but the rest I struggle with to be honest. I started out initially as an interpretive singer of traditional folk songs and then kind of grew into the songwriting which is a completely different skill set. I'd love if there was an ABC book for us songwriters but look, I'm delighted. I'm so pleased to have a creative life and to be still at it and doing it and I get incredible amounts of energy and richness from my singing and songwriting so it's great to be able to do it.”

Remember the aforementioned, "Passionate motivation?" Casey has discovered it right in her own backyard in Ireland when it comes to performing and it has called her to action; even though she never really took notice of it until recently.

“There's definitely a bias that favors male musicians and if you look at the lineups and festivals. We did some statistics there this year and it basically came out that it’s about 75-80 percent males and the rest women. So, we definitely need to make some ground and be more inclusive on every level, have more diversity and really allow all the people of Ireland to see themselves on stage, to be able to embrace that. I mean, it's a good thing and I think it's a good conversation to have and then everyone benefits from it and so it’s good. I suppose growing up that I just kind of took it for granted to be honest; I really almost wasn't even cognizant of it. I think I had an amount of interest in it myself so it was really me just framing things.”

Joining her in Hopewell will be two local artists; relative newcomer Helen O'Shea who is currently working on a new record and well-known aficionado James Popik (Supernova, Ten Foot Tall). Casey says that those attending the show can expect quite a variety.

“Yes and I can’t wait to be there! I’ve got a great agent and she's put together three weeks of gigs and actually three tours in 2023 so yeah, it's going great. I'm delighted to be back out after the pandemic and really happy to be here. I’m going to add some old songs, some old material from my repertoire and then some new songs from the new album coming next year and hopefully a bit of interesting conversation in between.”
