Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...7/27/23

"I don't think we've ever played there before and yes Marshall Crenshaw will be there with us," states Smithereens drummer Dennis Diken as he spoke about their upcoming August 5 show at Artie's Bar and Grill in Frenchtown, NJ. "We've been doing mostly extended weekends and we're also playing near Hershey, Pennsylvania that same weekend; it's all different. Last week we were in Ojai, California and that was a beautiful setting there. We played in a really nice amphitheater there and recently we played the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park and that was a fun gig; it's always great to play there. We played some theaters earlier in May; whatever the  people will allow as they say."

After the death of their long-time frontman and principal songwriter Pat DiNizio nearly six years ago, many were unsure what the band's future held but they rallied with the support of their fans and guest vocalists Crenshaw and Robin Wilson to push forward.

So; what have they been up to? Well, along with doing extended weekends where they perform two or three shows, they have been very busy releasing material from their vault with last year's "The Lost Album" and according to Diken; there is more yet to come.

"We did put out a record last year called, "The Lost Album" which was just that, some tapes that go back to 1993 and we have a lot more that we're going to be putting forth including a completely new studio album. So, we've got a whole  mess of archival things to present along with another record that we've been working on; there is a lot to come in the latter half of this year and the beginning of next year; there are a lot of releases that we're planning."

Like so many other bands with longevity who have achieved a level of success, The Smithereens are at the point where they are releasing new material to a fan base that wants to primarily hear their old material; a situation which can put a band with creative aspirations in a bind. However, according to Diken, the band doesn't see it as such and are more than happy to accommodate their proven fans as well as willing to take a shot in the arm by utilizing Marshall and Robin; something he says puts a fresh spin on things.

"We've reached that stage in our career where there is a lot of material to choose from and we do some songs from "The Lost Album" and we play the songs that people want to hear and that we like to play too, the more well-known tunes like "Blood And Roses," "Behind the Wall of Sleep," "Only A Memory;" those are all songs that are part of our legacy so to speak. So, we can't ignore those nor do we wish to ignore those and there are a lot of album tracks that we like to play; we like to do a cross-section of material and we like to throw in covers too. We like to have fun playing some of our favorite tunes by other artists, that's how we cut our teeth, that's how we started out. We are not doing any of Marshall's material, it's a strictly Smithereens show and that's the way we both kind of want it to be; as a matter of fact, he's out right now doing his own tour. So, he's straddling both worlds, which is nice. Sometimes, we come up with fresh ideas at soundcheck. Somebody will start playing a tune that we all dig from the past, we'll work it up at soundcheck and then put it in the show and see how it goes over."

Since they've not lost a stride and were able to survive after the passing of DiNizio; does it ever cross their minds that like all good things; the band may come to an end?

"No," said Diken emphatically, "In part because we have such deep roots together. Mike (Bass player/vocals Mesaros) we've known since third grade, Jimmy (Guitarist/vocals BabjakI met on the first day of high school; it's important if you're going to play in a band that you find people that you not only like to play with but that you like to spend a lot of time with; we really are like a family and Marshall fits in really well too, we get along real well with Marshall. This is what we do, that's my patent answer; this is what we do like anybody does their gig, whatever that might be in life. We all get the chance to branch out and play with other musicians but we always come back to The Smithereens and every time we hit the downbeat on any of those tunes, I try to bring something new and fresh to it every time I play so that it keeps it fresh and keeps it new. The other thing that keeps us going too is that we really do feel like we're kids again when we're on stage; we feel like we're teenagers and somehow, even if we're having a tiring day, we're still able to inject that energy into it which is a beautiful thing and I think that comes across to the audiences as well."

Artie's Bar and Grill is located at 1121 State Route 12 in Frenchtown. Tickets for the show are $30 in advance and the doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets, along with more information about The Smithereens can be found at https://www.officialsmithereens.com/

That's it for this week! Please continue to support live and original music and until next week....ROCK ON!
