“We’re from South Jersey but we're kind of all over the place," laughed vocalist Doug Goldspiel as he discussed the particulars of Huxley, past gigs as well as their new music. "We are mostly based out of the Williamstown area. I'm down in the Millville area actually but it's kind of just all over South Jersey. We're an active rock band, we have five members; myself who is the singer, we have our two guitarists, one is Chris Kelly, the other one is Mike Lamplugh; our bassist is Matt Williams and our drummer is Bill Finocchiaro or however you pronounce his last name; which is going to sound great (Laughs).”
Formed several years ago with a sound that some may call, "Composite Metal," due to a style derived from various eras and types of Metal and Rock music; the band has a uniqueness that starts with their name.
“A lot of people ask us that question, unfortunately the story winds up being not as fun as I guess it should be," chuckled Goldspiel. "We actually practiced on Huxley Street for a while and when we were trying to think of a band name; we had known a bunch of bands that kind of just used the street name that they practiced on and it turned out really well. I believe Coheed and Cambria was one of them and we just really liked the name Huxley and we thought that it was pretty cool and then on top of that, our drummer at the time wound up being a big Aldous Huxley the author fan and so it all kind of worked out. So, technically, we have been together for about two years but then COVID really kind of killed us. So, we released music right before we shut down for COVID; it was the January before and after we broke out, the world kind of shut down and since then we've just kind of been hanging status quo but now that the world has kind of opened back up; we're able to really come out and release more music and do more things.”
“We've grown up being fans of Metal music and being fans of old school rock'n'roll but also being fans of the modern-day music and we just felt like a meld of that would work perfectly. There are people out there that still like those riffy guitars and that like strong guitar work as long as there are catchy choruses and the fun kind of nuances that we put in. So, we actually like to call ourselves “Active Rock” where it's like if there is somebody who doesn't want or who's not looking for the lullaby type Rock and wants something in your face yet fun and moving and telling a good story without compromising that catchiness; that is what we are into.”
When it comes to satisfying the band's thirst for that sound in a genre as diverse as Metal and with the members' individual talents being scattered with other projects at times; how do they write and create their music?
“We have a really interesting kind of setup because Chris is away a lot of the time and he's kind of our main producer and the four guys Matt, Mike, Bill and I like to kind of get together and work on things or everybody kind of works at home and we communicate but it's very collaborative," he explained. "We're a bunch of guys that understand that music in general is not easy and that in order to appease a lot of people you want to make sure that at least the five guys involved like what you're doing and so we really work in a collaborative effort and send a lot of ideas over to Chris who then helps produce it and make it a little more, “Shiny” is how I like to say it; where you're taking out maybe an extra riff that we didn't need or a vocal line that was a little clunky and Chris is really our guy to kind of hone that in and clean it up but what we're striving for a lot is what you hear on the radio but what you can also hear on Octane. Something that's modern but something that's familiar so that anyone of any age or who likes any sort of rock genre can listen to and say, alright, I can get with that.”
Once their music was written, the next decision was to record it as well as release corresponding videos of their material and to do so they enlisted the help of some very experienced industry insiders but it was the decision itself that many may find interesting; the choice to not release a full-length album or an EP but to release everything as individual singles.
“We’ve gone through our gambit of singles for a little bit but a few months ago we released our kind of last single of this run called, “Flesh and Bone” and we're really excited about it. The song came out with a music video shot by a guy named Tom Flynn who does a lot of Lamb of God's music videos and that music video is awesome. We're really excited about it and the song is really cool too; we recorded it with one of the guitarists from Ice Nine Kills named RickyArmellino. We have a song called “Second Chances” which we released with a lyric video as well as our single before that called “Hate Me” which we recorded with a guy named Kane Churko who produces all of Five Finger Death Punch’s music. Our one guitarist Chris Kelly is very, very talented and he was in a lot of cool bands. He was in a band called Galactic Empire which was a Metal band doing versions of all of the “Star Wars” music; which is super cool if you haven't gotten to check them out you definitely have got to do so and it's really cool if you like Star Wars music and you like Metal music; it's like the perfect combination. So, he actually met Kane while doing a tour with them and Kane and him had been talking and he was interested in working with us and doing a single. So, that's how that came about and now Chris is actually in another band, he’s in Ice Nine Kills as well so, he's the guitarist currently with them."
“So, for now," he continued, "It's just singles because that’s just the way that everything kind of has gone in terms of music. You’ll find if you don't have that label money or investor money behind it that you’ll find that throwing a whole album out; you’ll end up losing. Let’s say it's an 11-song album, you write it and you’re just kind of throwing away 10 songs because you're marketing and things like that has to back all 11 songs. So, we like to really take our time and put together something that's really nice. I mean, if you see “Flesh and Bone” our music video, you'll see what I'm talking about. We really spent the time and the money honestly of making sure that we were putting something together that people can watch and really enjoy as opposed to kind of throwing 11 songs out without giving them something to hold onto.”
The band has done shows on a limited basis in 2022 due to personnel logistics and their decision to choose selectively but recently they shared a bill with Zenora in Vineland, NJ so; what's next?
“We've actually gotten pretty lucky; this was kind of the gear up to a couple things going on for us and then hopefully some things to come. We were actually selected to open up the MMRBQ for WMMR earlier this year on May 21 in Camden. We were really excited about that because we got to play with bands like Disturbed and PrettyReckless and Royal Blood so it was a really exciting experience and that’s something that we were striving for; just becoming a band that was on a station we all kind of grew up on and that was the the crux of a lot of our music coming out when it did as we were trying to get ready for that. After that we had a show in Millville with the band Lit and that was a lot of fun; they're just a blast to listen to and a blast from the past kind of thing and they're coming out with new music and they did a couple of cool songs so if you have a chance, you definitely have to check out their stuff. Then we had a couple local shows going on; we were the headliner at The Legendary Dobbs in June and after that the world is our oyster. We're talking to a couple people but we're definitely trying to get out there and get some tours together. “
That's it for this week! Please continue to support live and original music and until next week....ROCK ON!
