What do you get when you cross a group of men from Italy, Punk Rock and Hard Rock with a love of Celtic music? The answer is Uncle Bard & the Dirty Bastards; a hard driving, hard rocking, fast-paced unit with a take no prisoners approach.
Forged from a love of traditional Irish music infused with Celtic rock; these gentlemen from Northern Italy have shared stages with some of the largest names in their genre. Bands such as Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, The Dubliners, Socks in the Frying Pan and more have been part of their journey which is now taken another step with a new record label, a compilation album titled "The Story So Far" and future tour dates in the planning stages.
Recently, guitarist Silvano Ancellotti offered up his thoughts on the band, the new album, their influences and more.
“Well, we're actually all from Italy," he began slowly. "We often tour through Europe but we're all from Italy and exactly the same town, which is a small town very close to me. We all come from a Punk Rock-Hard Rock area but then in our hometown, in our small place, there is some kind of big interest for Celtic music and it always has been like that. We have a festival and quite a big one, one of the biggest in Italy actually and we have an Irish dance school; so, we kind of grew up with the music in our ears. So, at some point, it's kind of a funny challenge; we wanted to try to switch off from Hard Rock-Punk Rock to try this different type of music and this happened like 15 years ago.”
"Fifteen years ago?" So, what happened 15 years ago that caused them to go in such a direction? Ancellotti couldn't help but chuckle as he looked back on a unique time and learning period for the band.
“We can say that one of the things that really drew us to this type of music is that we, at some point, we saw our sound seem very close to styles like Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly and that kind of stuff. So, then we said, well, this is interesting; maybe we should try to go in that direction. Then we went back to the roots and started listening to a lot of Irish folk songs and traveling a lot to Ireland; trying to busk on the streets, playing in the pubs and trying to learn. I mean, you're a Flogging Molly fan so, I’m sure you can see why they were one of the reasons that we started doing this at the very beginning.”
“I would say," he continued, "That bands like the Clash or Social Distortion inspired us but also the Ramones,Dead Kennedys; we loved those too! We’ve been together for 15 years and we’ve done a few shows with Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys as well over here in Italy.”
Ancellotti lists Jersey's own Bruce Springsteen along with Joe Strummer and Brian Fallon as some of his most influential artists; hearing the band's overall sound and influences which vary from player to player; how did they pick a name to cover such diversity?
“Actually," he started with a laugh, "The name is a little fun story since our bass player, whose name is Uncle Bard, is the most shy guy in the band; we just put him in the spotlight. So, it was supposed to be the band name for just one gig and here we are 15 years later. I think it's just a bit difficult though sometimes with social promotion due to the Bastard word but anyway that's been good for us so far.”
Like many bands from Europe, marketing here in the United States and other areas of the world is not always an easy task. So, when they were approached by a new label, they welcomed the opportunity to advance their brand; even if one of their own went missing.
“The Story So far” is made up from albums we did that were released by us in the past," he explained. "We got in contact with Angel Air Records and they asked us to do something and they proposed a compilation and we said, yeah. The reason we did this is so that we can try to reach new markets in The US or other places where we are not distributed at the moment. So, this is mainly the reason that we did the compilation now and then we are doing a live album at the end of the year; this is the plan for now. We're going to record in France, in a small town in the South of France where there's a festival and the owner of Angel Air Records; who is from the UK but actually lives there and he proposed to record the live album at the gig at the festival. We found Brian while we were touring near that small village and Lorenzo Testa wasn't on stage since he went home with the COVID. So, we did show with really no expectations and then the day after the gig we got this e-mail from Brian saying, “You guys were fantastic yesterday, let's do something together;” just like in the movies. (laughs). We woke up the day after and told Lorenzo, we have a new record deal! You should stay home more often (laughs)!”
With plans firmly in hand and a successful string of shows behind them, they've set their sights on the future and a possible U.S. run.
“We play about one-hour-and-a-half or something like that; not three hours like Bruce Springsteen (laughs). I mean we used to do that back in the early days but now we're getting old. We had some festival dates in the summer at the end of August, we played close to home in Rome, then France and then we went through Switzerland and Germany. We had plans to come to the United States but that was before COVID and everything was canceled. So, probably, hopefully next year we'll be back. We did this show at the Dublin Irish Festival in Ohio three years ago and it was a fantastic experience and then we we're supposed to come back in a couple of years but COVID came up to ruin our plans and so that's it. Maybe it's good because now we can come back with more shows and go to more places.”
That's it for this week! Please continue to support live and original music and until next week....ROCK ON!
