Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...12/9/21

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 12/09/2021

Yeah, the music still sounds good and people still want to hear it; there’s nothing like it is there? I was listening to some of the old be-bop and blues the other night and they still sound great; it’s timeless,” stated founding member of the Yardbirds, drummer James McCarty.

McCarty was referring to music of bygone eras as well as his own band’s classic hits but it is here and in the now that has him excited as he has written a follow-up memoir to his original book, “Nobody Told Me” called “She Walks In Beauty.

However, this one was born from an interest in the great beyond, how it affects the present and circumstances that have greatly altered his life.

“She Walks In Beauty” is quite different from the other book,” he began deliberately; “This book is all about sort of  slightly paranormal. It all really started last year when my wife passed over, she had cancer and had been sick for a couple of years. It was such a shock that I decided to try and find out where she had gone (laughs) and what had happened to her. So, I did this journey and looked up various mediums and near death experiences and all of that thing and at the end of the story, I actually managed to communicate with her quite strongly and I have lots of evidence that it was her and it was quite pleasing and it helped with the grief a lot. So, I decided to put it all in a book; I go back to the early years when I was in the band and the experiences that I had then and then come forward to all of the things that had happened with her.”

With a new lease on the after-life, Jim felt more free to discuss what led him to write the first book and what allowed him to continue with the second. He writes of his visits to China, the Himalayas and India and how they relate to what he felt was a connection between, “The living and the dead.” He also relates stories from these jaunts as well as tales of his musical adventures.

“It’s quite left field; isn’t it? He said with a laugh. “The more you know the bigger the world gets; doesn’t it? Everything is connected, everything gets bigger, it’s amazing, it’s an amazing thing. This book was a direct result of her passing; I had the other book as you know and that went quite well. This actually came up in a medium session, the medium in question said that Lizzie my wife was suggesting that I might want to do a blog about these experiences and then it turned into a book. So, I contacted Dave Thompson the rock writer who did the other book with me who is English but lives in America and I thought he won’t be interested in something like this but I’ll ask him and he said yes. He said he loved all of this stuff, that he was really into this and that he had studied on it and it worked out really well with him. It took me only about six months to write it, it is much shorter than the other one but I think it is a good read, most people really like it.”

Best known as the drummer of Yardbirds, McCarty also has another side; that of a singer-songwriter and it seems that although the book is his main focus at the moment; he has been busy in a couple of other ways as well

“Well, prior to the lockdown we the Yardbirds were supposed to be playing in October somewhere in New Jersey and we were going to come over and do a tour but that was cancelled and is pushed off until April now. We’ve not really been rehearsing but we have been bouncing some live recordings around; we’ve been involved from the inside. We found some live recordings and we’ve been working on those and sort of polishing them up. I’m trying to write some of my own things but right now we are basically working around the subject of the book and see were that goes. I am always happy to write more songs, I have lots of ideas going on; I like writing and singing but that’s separate from the band.”

So, if or when this tour happens; will you be using New Jersey’s own Kenny Aaronson on bass?

“We’ve not done a gig for a while but Kenny will be our bassist when we do; he’s very good.”
