ROCK ON! This Week's Sound Bites...12/26/19

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 12/26/2019

Another year is in the books and as we get set to turn the page on 2019 and look back upon our triumphs and tragedies, successes and failures of the last 12 months we should all keep this in mind; it is never as good or as bad as it possibly could have been.

Perspective is everything and as we venture forth into 2020 and make resolutions to lose weight, be better musicians, contribute more, spend less, never drink again etc; we need to realize that there are those out there who are in need. People just like us who need food, a warm bed and a roof over top of it, gainful employment or sometimes just someone such as us to give encouragement.

The year 2019 was a very good one for this journalist filled with many ups which fortunately outweighed the downs but it wasn't always that way. Without getting too personal, it should be known that if not for the charity of others and the grace of God, things could have been much different and you'd not be reading this space at the moment.

The long and short of it is; we all need each other. The so called "Street people" who are the homeless, the addicts, the prostitutes, hustlers, thieves and vagrants in most cases do not want the life they are currently living and yes some do; yes some choose this but most want more. They want the same things out of life that we all do but through poor choices or being dealt a bad hand find themselves literally on the outside looking in.

Below is a Facebook status posted by this journalist in 2014 when things weren't so abundant; shall you choose to read it through to its completion, please think about it and count your blessings. Be grateful for what you have and cherish the now because there are those out there who have nothing. So before you scoff, or react in disgust just remember this; we are all only a loss away from walking in their shoes.

December 21, 2014

"Take a Penny, Leave a Penny." We've all seen this on cash registers in stores,be it a large operation or a small establishment. How many of us can truly appreciate the value of a penny?

Yesterday, while returning from a trip into Trenton (Via my old UPS Route), I witnessed a homeless person scouring the curb line in front of a bank; looking for change or something/anything to sustain his existence. Over the 20 years that I delivered down this corridor I saw this scene repeated and played out countless times. On a daily basis I bought coffee, lunches, snacks or gave them things such as deodorant, shampoo and meal coupons. The homeless and the hookers were not only my pals but my guardians in an increasingly violent and decaying, once proud state capital. One time they did save me...another story for another time.

However I was unable to help as traffic and logistics prevented me from stopping but let's think about that penny. That penny which we often toss back to the establishment and say, "Nah keep it.," or scoff and say, "It's ONLY a penny what am I gonna do with it?" That penny to some may be the difference between a hot meal and sadly their next drink. That very penny can be the difference between going to bed hungry or with a smaller hunger pain.

Imagine being in the position to not eat because something cost .99 cents and you only have .98? How many of us can fathom wondering where our next meal may be coming from because we couldn't find enough loose change in front of a bank on a cold December morning?

As we sit down with friends and/or family remember what they mean; for just as they are precious to us all, so is that penny which we take for granted. To that homeless man that penny or loose change is a find that makes him rich beyond his wildest dreams."Only 99 more and I can buy a coffee to warm my hands and stomach." I've actually heard that before believe it or not. So before you toss it aside, remember that everything has its value no matter how big or how small.

                                                                                                                                                 ~DC~
