Learn About How Eastern Music Affected Western Music

originally published: 12/29/2015

(ATLANTIC CITY/BRIDGETON, NJ) -- Discover how Eastern and Western music affected each other at the January installment of music lectures by Paul M. Somers given in four counties.   In this installment, beginning on Monday, January 11, 2016 in Little Egg Harbor Township and Vineland, learn how Eastern music—including Arabic, Indian, Chinese, and Japanese—each had an effect on Western music, if only in imitation. Each was, in turn, affected by Western music. You will hear examples of each. These monthly lectures are sponsored by the Bay Atlantic Symphony.

The lectures will occur on Monday, January 11, at the Ocean County Library, Little Egg Harbor Branch, 290 Mathistown Rd., Little Egg Harbor Township; and that same day from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Vineland Public Library, 1058 E. Landis Ave., Vineland; Tuesday, January 12 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Ocean City Public Library, Room 110, 1735 Simpson Ave., Ocean City; Wednesday, January 13, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Atlantic County Library, Mays Landing Branch, 40 Farragut Ave., Mays Landing; and Thursday, January 14, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Margate Public Library, 8100 Atlantic Ave., Margate.

Subsequent lectures this season will consist of a two-part series on music and literature in February and March, a question-and-answer session in April, and a Fresh Ears® experience in May.

Somers, Adult Education Director for the Bay Atlantic Symphony and co-founder with his wife Janet of Maurice River Music, is also a composer and a performer, who was for 25 years the harpsichordist for the Virtuoso Strings of New York. For 10 years, he was a reviewer for the Star-Ledger.

The lectures are co-sponsored by the libraries in which they given.
