(MONTCLAIR, NJ) -- Vanguard Theater Company will partner with Out Montclair for the first performance of its World Premiere of “Walk in My Gravity,” with Councilman Peter Yacobellis joining Vanguard Founding Artistic Director Janeece Freeman Clark on stage to introduce the show. “Walk in My Gravity,” written by teens and young adults as part of VTC Next, takes audiences on a journey through the true weight of their gravity, because you never truly know what someone is going through until you take a walk in their shoes.
Performances take place Saturday, June 26 at 3:00pm and 8:00pm, and Sunday at 4:00pm, with tickets available for purchase online. Each show is 100 person capacity.
“We’re so happy to be partnering with Out Montclair for our opening performance of this World Premiere,” states Clark. “The issues addressed in “Walk in My Gravity,” sometimes with humor and always with love and introspection, include gender norms, sexual identity, hyper-masculinity, code-switching, the pressures of social media, body image, and more. We couldn’t think of a better partner than Out Montclair, which, like Vanguard, is dedicated to providing safe spaces for people to be unapologetically themselves. We look forward to continuing our collaboration through Montclair Pride 2022, and beyond.”
In another exciting development, Vanguard was thrilled to be one of 8 organizations awarded a grant as part of the Montclair Foundation’s Spring 2021 cycle. The grant provides project support for Montclair seniors in partnership with Lifelong Montclair. With proceeds from the grant, Vanguard will provide virtual and in person activities to seniors, including a six-week movement class geared for all abilities, senior improv class, and a workshop for elders based on their time living in Montclair, to be shared with local schools and libraries.
Vanguard Theater Company is a unique nonprofit committed to changing the narrative through theater dedicated to DREAM: Diversity, Reciprocity, Education, Activism & Mentorship. Since opening on June 4th, Vanguard has been presenting performances for the public, and will be hosting classes, camps and programs for emerging artists.
The Vanguard is newly renovated, with a state of the art HVAC air exchange and filtration system, touchless fixtures, and other health and safety precautions, to help patrons feel safe and comfortable. Street parking is available, as well as parking in the nearby TD Bank and Lackawanna Plaza lots. The Vanguard is up one flight of stairs and there is no lift in the building.
