Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...7/25/24

Rock On! This Week

"I go a lot between South Florida and Brooklyn; not depending on my mood but depending on the weather. I was on The Monsters of Rock cruise, I'd never done it before. My other mainstay is a band called Spread Eagle out of New York City. We've never done any work like that so the cruise asked us on for the first time so it was super exciting," said vocalist Ray West of the aforementioned Spread Eagle as he elaborated on his other endeavor, SupaFly.

Signed with Deko Entertainment, West seems to have found a nice "Vibe" for the band's recent release and loves how it all came together and the support that he and it are receiving on all fronts.

"SupaFly is a separate project; I've had the concept for this band for a while, almost a decade but I've never really got to put it together. So, it's a band that's grown organically out of the South Florida region, the songs are from demos we've had sitting around and I didn't want these songs to go to waste. I've always wanted to build a band around these songs and so we did some remixes and a lot of re-singing and we put these tracks together and I wanted the name Supafly because I just love the fucking name. Then I got Deko to help me put it out; Charlie Calv and Bruce Pucciarello are sweet guys and my manager jumped on and she's come onboard. So, the album is called "The Vibe;" why? Because we feel when people listen to this music, it creates a certain vibe that sort of goes into them and it's a very groove heavy album. So, it's about very deep pockets of groove, its melodic, it's got a lot of urban grooveness to it and it's something I'm really proud of; my co-writer, engineer and producer Miguel Gonzalez is a hands on, full on self-contained dude and we put the band together with guitar player Steve Rose and drummer Phil T and Miguel on bass and myself just being the dancing monkey and it seems to be something really cool. Long story short, with Deko helping me release it, we put it out to see how it does, got some merch out, got the brand out so we can get in some people's faces, the record dropped on March 8 and we put out a single back then called "Drowning Man."

In the music business, players come and go, perform with others, concoct side gigs or flat out leave sometimes successful situations for the coveted 'Solo" career. According to West, such is not the case with these two similar yet very different projects; if there is any confusion however, it comes in fitting them in a genre.

"Spread Eagle is very brotherhood-ish and really real, SupaFly is really soulful and I don't mean that in a funk way, I mean it because everyone is very genuine and authentic," he said with sincerity. "I've known Steve Rose for quite some time and Miguel Gonzalez for years and we started working together about two decades ago but we never got to put out an album together. So, I've known Miguel through the years as a brilliant bass player, singer, producer, writer, just an all-around cat. He's that guy who plays in a lot of bands and keeps himself pretty busy. Phil, I met through connections because we all kind of know the same people; it's like the six degrees of SupaFly. These guys wanted to get involved in the project so they all came willing and everybody seems to fit the bill. We all get along really well, rehearsals go great; there is something to be said for instant camaraderie. There are a lot of people who can come into a room and fake it and not really mean it and all of these cats really mean it."

"Rob De Luca of Spread Eagle has spent a lot of time working in UFO and being Sebastian Bach's side guy and those are great singers but Spread Eagle is our baby; it's something we did together. When we were kids, we got signed by MCA  and did the two albums with MCA and then the business did what it did and the timing of our style of music got overshadowed by the Grunge thing. We were in the Guns N' Roses / Skid Row mold; hard rock street vibe-ish, we were labeled as "New York Street Metal," I never heard of that before. The band was an organic signing out of New York City, big energy out of the city blah, blah, blah, the swagger goes into the music yadda, yadda, yadda; Spread Eagle is what it is, a good hard rock band that doesn't do tracks but because we're from New York City there is a sort of swagger to it and a New York Street vibe to it so it is New York Street Metal which sounds cool when I say it now (laughs)."

Like many in the rock 'n' roll world, West has had his personal demons but does being in two bands that have similar styles and followings affect his approach to anything?

"You mean musically? I'm going to say yes. I'd say that Spread Eagle has my heart. I love being in a hard rock band, love the collaborative where everybody has equal say but at the same time, I do have my own singular taste in music that I like and I like to have a way to express that and SupaFly is that. It gives me a chance to show a little more vocal versatility, it's a bit more personal on the lyric side. So, I'd say that SupaFly is more like my calling card, it's very autobiographical lyrics, it's very emotionally intense stuff for me; to others it's just good songs but for me, it's an emotionally intense piece of music; I hope that makes sense. We put out a single called "Hypothermia" for SupaFly which is a more melodic, softer side of rock, it's not rat-tat-tat; it's more like a melodic and very vibe-ish, like that South Florida sun vibe. My point is, I went through rehab; I've been in like seven rehabs in my life because at one point, drugs were a big part of my life and for me to get out of it, writing these lyrics was my therapy; as corny and cathartic as that is. When I was a kid and signed to MCA, I got everything I wanted handed to me really, really fast. Everything came really quickly and I don't think I appreciated it and because of that my insecurities came into play and at some point insecurities meets drugs and it becomes a nice warm blanket for that. So, I just went into a rabbit hole; I wasn't a very good addict, I obviously didn't hurt or kill myself because I'm still here and to get through that, I looked on the inside and wrote my stuff out and it actually felt good to do that. Musically it seems to work, I'll hear a rif and I'll think, oh man, I've got something in my journal that I can put on that or it makes me feel a certain way so I can write it in 30 seconds. It's the creative process for me, I never took it serious as a kid and I found it was a really cleansing thing for me."

July 19 saw Spread Eagle in Seaside Heights, NJ and July 20 in Northampton, PA with a July 27 show in Connecticut being all that's left before they head out to the mid-west and eventually over to Europe. So, with both projects gathering steam; has it changed West's outlook or attitude in any way?

"I've busted my ass for two years with Spread Eagle trying to get the band active so that people know it's there and then you get invited to some cool things and your profile goes up and you get some cooler gigs but you have to prove that you belong," he stated emphatically. "So, as hard as we've been working, that's what it takes. A year and-a-half ago, I had a bad vocal  experience joining a band that I had no business joing and I sang for two nights and they fired me. They were like, "Dude, you haven't sung" and I was like, "You're right man, I've really got to work at this" and so I've been busting my ass to become the performer that I want to be."

"You've got to have faith in yourself because everybody that wants to bring you down has their hand on the trigger on the keyboard to write something anyway," he continued, "I think once you learn to block out the noise and just have fun; as long as I'm having a good time, enjoy what I'm doing and believe what I'm doing is legit and authentic; I think I'll be OK."
