Rock On! This Week

"Yes, I've played there many times. My favorite part? That's a loaded question," laughed Popa Chubby as he discussed his upcoming April 19 gig at The Lizzie Rose Music Room in Tuckerton, NJ, his thoughts on today's blues, the process of making music and much more. "It's the people. I get to play to a certain demographic of New Jersey fans that I don't get to play to very much; Lou filled a niche in that market."

With a style that has been called, "Tempestuous" and "Soulful," a style which he himself has described as, "The Stooges meets Buddy Guy, Motorhead meets Muddy Waters and Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson," Popa Chubby is every bit of that and as you will read; he's also incredibly direct.

A New Yorker, Chubby doesn't hold back; his in your face style and hard work have served him well as he has navigated Blues music's tumultuous clubs and characters for 35 years; building a groundswell of followers and successes.

This past summer, he headlined The Long Branch Jazz & Blues Festival where he joined Eliza Neals on stage for a Hendrix tune and according to Chubby he never tires of playing the "Old stuff" or music from another hero of his which has opened his ears and eyes to more than just the guitar.

"Yeah, that was a lot of fun; Eliza and I have worked together previously, she's a friend, I like what she does. I think she's an original character and I like what she's done. Right now, I'm getting into and I'm all about getting into Latin percussion and do you know what I really like? Each of the elements has its own part and each element plays its own part; ya know? There is a clave, it plays one part, the cowbell plays another part, the bongs play another part, congas play another part and timbales play another part and then it becomes a fucking symphony. I've always been a drummer and in all honesty, over the last few months I've been on a big Santana jag again. I've gone back to the first two Santana records and it has kind of rearranged my chromosomes; plus, I'm from New York man, the official sound of New York is Salsa. I lived on the Lower East Side and there was Salsa everywhere. There was Salsa and Merengue and all sorts of shit just poppin' and it makes the Puerto Rican girls dance and that's why it's good and anything that shakes the booty stops the men from fighting."

Espousing views that will never be confused with mainstream, Chubby (Born Ted Horowitz) doesn't hold back about his upcoming European tour, the different successes with audiences there vs here in the U.S., his thoughts on the politicization of music as well as the International Blues Challenge held in Memphis each year and the local events which lead up to it and the "Dangerous" nature of the blues.

"I'm just doing weekend shows until I go back out in May for three weeks to Europe," he began. "I think we have more success over there but it's apples and oranges. Everybody is cool and I'm lucky to have good fans globally that support me; it's fun playing The Lizzie Rose and it's fun playing The Olympia in Paris. It's not like that anymore, it used to be like that 30 years ago but now it's a global market, everybody has the internet, everybody knows what's out there so it is what it is. If you want success in this business you've got to put in the work, you've got to put in the time to build a following and it takes decades. The problem is, now there is just so much shit that is created; it doesn't happen organically anymore. In all honesty, they've got the IBCs; I'm not a fan of that, it's just controlling the market. All they are doing is picking who they want to have success, it has nothing to do with the public or what is really successful. Everything becomes fucking corporate, everything becomes controlled and people stop thinking about what they like and like what they are told to like. I think in all honesty and in my humble opinion; I'm against it. I don't think music should be a competitive sport; it's all political. C'mon man, every one of these fucking blues societies is putting up their act who is gonna win their thing so they go to Memphis and get their thing, it's all a bunch of bullshit man, I'm sorry. I just don't adhere to it. I don't adhere to that aspect of it. I think it's ridiculous. Fucking Muddy Waters never won a fucking IBC, Little Walter never won an IBC; he fucking shot people. Fucking Hubert Sumlin stood on fucking stage with Howlin' Wolf while a fucking jealous husband came in and threatened to kill him; now that's an IBC, that's a blues challenge. You want to go fucking stand in front of a panel of stupid white people in hats and show them how good your fucking pentatonic scale is? I've got no time for that and you can quote me on all of this. I think blues is dangerous because when I started playing and sometimes when I'd go in to get paid, they'd put a gun on the table and say, "Do you want the money or the gun?" I'd say, gimme the fucking money or use the gun! Because if you punked out once, then that promoter told every other fucking promoter in the business that you were a punk and they could get over on you and that's a fact and I'll name names if you want. There was another promoter who after you fucking played and went in to get paid, he'd pull out a deck of cards and go, "I'll cut you for what I owe you." Well, he did that with one guy and the guy lost and had a heart attack in his office, that's what made blues dangerous. You know what else made blues dangerous? Blues is played in juke joints. Juke joints were where people got off from working in the factories for 12 hours and they were open 24/7 and there was gambling, there was sex, there was drugs, there was whiskey and there was blues in these places and sometimes, people got burnt, they got killed and nobody cared because they were all black people. Nobody cared if all black people got killed; that's what made blues dangerous man. Listen to the words of the old songs, listen to the words of "I'm Ready," "I got an axe handle pistol on a graveyard train, shooting tombstone bullets on balls and chains. I'm drinking TNT, I'm smokin' dynamite, hope some schoolboy wanna start a fight," that's blues, that's dangerous, that's what I'm talkin' about. That's the element of the music, when I saw Buddy Guy for the first time; I was afraid. His energy was so fucking intense, I was like; what the fuck is this? This is like Jimi Hendrix on steroids. How often do you see that? How often do you see somebody who challenges you or challenges what you think? Everybody is just sucking the corporate tit now; it's a hard business, everything is a hard business but the music business is hard and you've got a lot of people in it now who, the concept of paying your dues has gone south for a lot of people; not everybody but again, the way I got successful was by doing fucking 200 gigs a year for 35 years. Now, you've got these people who have a fucking YouTube video that's got a hundred thousand hits and they've got a website and they are really good at promotion and 90 percent of the shit you see of promtion is just smoke and mirrors. It doesn't really mean anything, it's just people promoting their shit. There is a lot of white noise in the genre and there's a lot of good stuff; a lot of people can play. There are a lot of good guitarists out there but what are they really saying? There's not a lot of good songs; I don't know. In all honesty, all the people want to hear now are tribute bands, they want to hear the music they grew up with. I don't have a problem with that, I like playing Jimi Hendrix and Santana, I'll play that old shit all night. I always give the people what they want; that's where it's at, at this point, I'm just trying to have a good time playing music."

"BB King is gone; who is left?" He continued, "Buddy is retiring, that ship has sailed and I love Buddy with all of my heart, he's one of my heroes but do I really need to hear fucking Buddy and Ally Venable do a song together? No, I don't and I love Ally Venable, she's a nice girl, she really is and she's a good guitar player, she's a kid but I don't need it, I don't need to hear the shameless self-promotion.The genre has turned into a big muck of mess and I'm just trying to float through it and have a good time."

A veteran of the New York Punk scene and a dominating presence both on stage and off, his off stage music taste is as diverse as the tattoos which adorn his body.

"I listen to Hip-Hop, Jazz, Soul, Funk, Disco, Latin music, I like music, I like all music."

So; what is in store for those attending the Friday April 19 show in Tuckerton?
