New Jersey International Film Festival presents Marissa Nadler in Concert

(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) -- The New Jersey International Film Festival presents Marissa Nadler in concert on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 7:00pm. Over the course of nearly 20 tireless years of writing, recording, and touring, Marissa Nadler has amassed one of the most singular catalogs in contemporary music. Her work glides between delicate folk, windswept Americana, doom metal-adjacent darkness, meditative ambient music, and fearlessly experimental sounds, all anchored in her unmistakable singing voice and finger-style guitar.
Shortly after finishing her Masters degree at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Nadler released her first proper full-length album, the ethereal Ballads of Living and Dying, in 2004. Though she was initially associated with the indie-folk movement, Nadler soon distinguished herself with her willingness to go darker and more personal, writing songs that felt deeply intimate with solitude and heartbreak while still retaining an otherworldly sheen. If she was born a century earlier, it’s not a stretch to imagine that her vast talents would be mistaken for conjured magic.
After a decade of releasing records with various labels and on her own, Nadler joined forces with Sacred Bones Records and Bella Union for 2014’s seismic July. That record marked a kind of reset in Nadler’s career, and the sounds she explored there served as a jumping off point for subsequent modern classics like For My Crimes and her collaboration with Stephen Brodsky, Droneflower — both of which she created the cover art for. The Path of the Clouds is Nadler’s ninth solo album, and it feels like yet another significant evolution. Two decades into a storied career, there’s still an untapped reservoir of thrilling musical ideas and stirring emotions lurking in her endlessly creative mind.
Her latest release, The Wrath of the Clouds, is a five song EP from 2022 that features two covers and three previously unreleased tracks written during the same period as The Path of the Clouds. This period was a fruitful and prolific time for Nadler and after mixing and mastering last years’ full length that featured guest appearances from Emma Ruth Rundle, Mary Lattimore, and Amber Webber to name a few, Nadler rediscovered a few songs she had written during this time and said it felt like “like uncovering lost gems that I had forgotten about.” She thought they fit together sonically and conceptually with the two cover songs she had been eagerly waiting to record so she went back to the studio and the result is a beautiful release as rich and essential as its predecessor.

The 29th Annual New Jersey International Film Festival takes place Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays between May 31-June 9, 2024. The Festival will be a hybrid one as we will be presenting it online as well as doing in-person screenings at Rutgers University. "I'm excited, I love traveling and singing. I don't really tour for any particular reason; except for the pandemic I've never stopped since 1968," began music legend Don McLean as he talked about his career, folk music, "The SONG," and his upcoming May 4 show at Monmouth University's Pollak Theatre. "I just like rambling and singing and going and having a certain rhythm to my life where I'm home for a while and then I go to some place that maybe I've been to before or maybe never was before; when I would do foreign tours in places like Australia, England or Europe, that would often be behind an album and that would be called the "Prime Time" tour or the "American Pie" tour, the "Headroom" tour or whatever it was depending on the album because you'd be on a bus for a month and do 25 to 27 shows and that was intense and I've done many, many of those. I've decided to stop doing that sort of thing and what I'm doing now and will continue to do is the occasional one or two nights and then some time off. I'll go overseas for one or two shows; I'm going over to England to perform at a festival in August and I'll stay at a nice hotel with my girlfriend and we're gonna visit nice restaurants and do some sightseeing and that's what I'm gonna do from now on. Anybody else would say, "You are still working" but to me that's semi-retirement."

(ATLANTIC CITY, NJ) -- Fresh off the heels of announcing their first album in 15 years, Happiness Bastards, legendary rock band The Black Crowes has announced their 2024 headline tour – set to hit 35 cities in North America and Europe this Spring in support of their forthcoming studio album. Locally the tour comes to Radio City Music Hall in NYC on April 27; Ovation Hall at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City on May 4; and The Met in Philadelphia on May 7, 2024.
