(SOUTH ORANGE, NJ) -- South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) presents a screening of Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at 7:00pm. This is a documentary film directed by GRAMMY and Emmy Award winning filmmaker James Keach. A short acoustic set by Junior Mack will kick off the night.

Gregg Allman was one of the founding figures of American rock, a vocalist, songwriter, and organist whose voice carried more lived experience than almost anyone else in music. Now, his full story comes to the screen. Directed by GRAMMY and Emmy Award winning filmmaker James Keach, The Sound of My Voice, Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul is the definitive portrait of one of rock’s most towering and complicated figures. Plus, join us for an engaging and enlightening post-screening Q&A.

The Full Story, Finally Told: Drawing on archival recordings, unseen interviews, and rare Allman Brothers Band live footage, the film traces Allman’s journey from his formative years through the meteoric rise of the ABB, the shattering loss of his brother Duane, decades of addiction and redemption, and a prolific solo career.

A Filmmaker Who Understands the Territory: Keach brings the same empathy and narrative rigor to Allman’s story that he brought to Glen Campbell’s battle with Alzheimer’s and Linda Ronstadt’s loss of her voice. That understanding of how trauma and artistry intertwine is what makes this film something deeper than a standard music documentary.

Before the Film: A Live Prelude: The evening opens with a rare treat — a three-song acoustic set from Junior Mack of Friends of the Brothers. A 2011 New York Blues Hall of Fame inductee, Mack’s soulful, gospel-rooted playing has put him on stage with the Allman Brothers, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Phil Lesh, and Robert Randolph.
After the Film: An Intimate Conversation: Following the screening, the evening continues with a live talkback and Q&A hosted by Michael Lehman, Gregg Allman’s longtime manager and dear friend, as well as lead producer of the film; and Alan Paul, singer and guitarist with Friends of the Brothers and author of two New York Times bestselling books about the Allman Brothers Band. This is not a panel of commentators, these are people who were there.

JUNIOR MACK — A 2011 inductee into the New York Blues Hall of Fame, Junior Mack has shared the stage with the Allman Brothers, Dickey Betts, Warren Haynes, Los Lobos, Phil Lesh, Robert Randolph, and Derek Trucks. He fronted Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band for 13 years, co-founded the Grammy-nominated Heritage Blues Orchestra, and starred as the solo musician in Ruben Santiago-Hudson’s Broadway hit Lackawanna Blues (2022 Drama Desk Award winner).

This film is not a highlight reel; it’s a fully realized portrait of the man behind the icon. For fans of the Allman Brothers Band, and anyone who believes that great art comes from the hardest places, this one is not to be missed.

Fans of the Allman Brothers Band can see Friends of the Brothers perform at SOPAC on Friday, October 2, 2026 at 7:30pm as well. Rolling Stone calls them a band that plays these songs “as if they’d written them.” The Allman Brothers Band’s own Kirk West puts it even more directly: “Friends of the Brothers isn’t a tribute band.
