(HILLSBOROUGH, NJ) -- As Millstone Borough celebrates its 250th anniversary, local residents will have an opportunity to experience the community's history in a different way—through live theater.
The Final Tolling of the Bells, an original historical play written and produced by Millstone’s own renowned playwright Vita Morales, will be presented on Saturday, October 10, 2026 at Hillsborough Reformed Church (1 Amwell Road) in Hillsborough Township. Admission is free, and a question-and-answer session will follow the performance. Showtime is 6:00pm
Morales received a Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Medal of Merit for The Final Tolling of the Bells. The play is now being presented as part of Millstone’s 250th anniversary celebration, bringing the community’s history to life through the voices and experiences of the people who lived it.
Sponsored by Hillsborough Reformed Church and the Millstone Borough Historic Commission, the production offers audiences a glimpse into Millstone during an earlier chapter of its history.
Rather than simply recounting dates and events, The Final Tolling of the Bells explores the human stories behind them—the people who lived, worked, loved, struggled, and built their lives in the place we now call home. Through striking language and thought-provoking themes, the play invites audiences to consider how the choices, conflicts, and hopes of the past continue to resonate in the present.
The production features local actors and community members and was created specifically for Millstone’s 250th anniversary celebration. Presenting the play in a historic church setting provides an especially fitting backdrop for a performance centered on the community’s past.
“I was struck by the power of the writing and by how relevant and thought-provoking the play remains,” said Cindy Hetzel, producer of the anniversary production. “Although the story is rooted in Millstone’s history, its questions and themes continue to speak to us today. This production offers the community an opportunity not only to learn about where we came from, but also to reflect on the choices and challenges that continue to shape us.”
The performance is free and open to the public. Community members, local history enthusiasts, families, and visitors are invited to attend.
