Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites... 09/24/2026

"Oh gosh, what would you like to know?" Responded Los Angeles based singer-songwriter and touring artist Paula Fong as she discussed the upcoming October 2 release of her first full-length album, "A Bird on the Wing." 

Fong is an artist who draws from various influences and styles and doesn't shy away from incorporating them into her music nor is she afraid to tell one so. Recently she elaborated on her history, influences and more, giving a glimpse into what makes this artist with the powerful voice go; oh and also her take on what exactly is "Americana."
"I am a singer-songwriter and solo artist," she started, "I write in the genre of the general Americana umbrella that leans towards roots; sometimes I venture into a bit more of a folk sound and the way that I got my musical heritage was varied like most folks are; I grew up singing in church and also spent some time in the French countryside and ended up hearing a lot of the French folk music which has Gaelic roots in it when I was young. Then I joined my church band and got a lot of musical education there from the folks who were putting together that service, they were all special musicians who taught me a lot about the history of that music. So, I think that comes through; all of those things that I mentioned come through in the way that I write as well as my choral and church music background; that affects a lot of the things that I am drawn to as far as vocal, harmony and melody lines. So, yeah, that's it in a nutshell for me; I also sang backup for some bands around L.A. One of the main bands I sang for was Tracy Newman and The Reinforcements. She was a founder of The Groundlings which is a feeder group for SNL. So, she interwove folk music with comedic music as well and she wrote for TV, she was an influence. I wrote and sang with Tom Kel who was a Seattle based singer-songwriter who came down and was signed to Warner for a couple of years and then of course, as often is the case, after a couple of albums came out,  he was dropped from the label but he never stopped writing. So, he and I teamed up and put out a couple of albums together until he unfortunately passed from cancer and then I ended up pursuing more of my own solo music after that. So, this new project is my first endeavor after having worked with Tom to really put out music of my own."
"This is my first full-length solo album," she went on, "Americana is an umbrella which encompasses, gospel, blues, roots, which if you look into the background of roots, I would say that it goes somewhat into the Appalachian tradition of old time which also stretches into bluegrass and country. So, Americana is a really broad umbrella that if you're gonna come at it from a really broad angle encompasses country, bluegrass, folk, gospel and blues; I think they all fit under that umbrella of Americana and the roots of those things come from the Appalachian music that came from across the ocean that came from Celtic music, from Scottish, Irish, English traditions that made its way into our mountains and stayed there for many years and developed its own brand and flavor. You've got things like Cajun music which is a branch off of that as well which also fits under the Americana umbrella which I don't do. I don't know if that's too broad but I see it as when people talk with terms to try and fit their sound, it is so hard, I understand the struggle. I know why people try to come up with new terms for it because they want to stand out, I'd say that "Roots" definitely probably has a longer tradition than Americana, the term itself and is much less widely known than something like blues or gospel and folk.  We also have a lot of preconceived notions when it comes to discussing folk music, it can get pigeonholed into more protest songs or Pete Seeger type which is wonderful music but doesn't necessarily encompass a lot the newer sounds that artists are coming out with these days. So, that's why I think people lean on Americana as a phrase but I think it's an interesting discussion."
 
So, with that in mind and with her music and songwriting drawing from so many different styles, how does she classify herself? Does she even do so? According to her, well, she seems a bit non-committal. 
 
 "You have subcategories that belong under a main category that's fair, isn't it?  You can't just say, I only do rock music or I only do folk music or I only do blues music because I'm not a blues player but there are elements of blues in some of my music and there are elements of country in my music but I wouldn't call myself a country artist . I wouldn't call myself a country artist, I wouldn't call myself a bluegrass artist, I wouldn't say that I'm a gospel singer but there are parts of that music that make their way or are part of the fabric of mine. I mentioned the Celtic influence from France was heavy on me when I was young, I did a lot of acapella singing when I was in school and I think that the church band, which was a very eclectic band (Laughs) but the pastor who created the service had a band of six musicians who were professional musicians come in and bring secular music or music from the world into the service because he felt that music had its own spiritual element. He wanted it to not be a place where the service happened and people left and they didn't think about how it may transfer to the rest of their lives. He wanted to bring in something from their lives from outside and that was folk music, gospel music, that was music they had grown up with that sometimes had a spiritual bend and sometimes it didn't but it was a way to kind of bring those two worlds together. So, with our director, we played everything from Bob Dylan to Jackson Browne, Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris, all kinds of music that in my mind, kind of half formed my idea of what Americana was because it was pretty broad what she would draw from. Her husband was an award winning blues artist and I would travel around with him and just kind of sit backstage at some of his shows and soak that in so that affected me a lot as well. The fiddle was my first instrument but I don't tell people that (Laughs) and my teacher was an old time fiddle player and there is a subtle difference between the old time tradition and more bluegrass playing. So, without really going into explaining where he had gotten it from, he definitely influenced me with his tastes and the way that he taught and he went on to teach me guitar as well so I definitely got a lot from him. So, yeah, those were a lot of influences that I had. I'd say that The Wailin' Jennys, Patty Griffin and Nickel Creek were three really big influences on me musically when I was younger as well as a lot of the names I mentioned before. Every week, I had to learn three new songs from three different artists that could be three different sort of in that umbrella of Americana genre and also sing four part harmony old church house and that's what the service would be composed of and we do that every week. We just had our twentieth anniversary so it has been a while since I've been doing that I suppose."
 
The new record showcases her diversity and willingness to include all of her influences and likes in one collection. The upcoming release features songs with bluegrass, a bit of old school country (Think Tammy Wynette), folk and all she has previously alluded to overtones; so is there any specific formula or thing that kick-starts her songwriting process? 
"A Bird on the Wing," she began slowly. "I would say that my EP I put out in 2024 ("Chestnut Mare") was a collection of songs that I kind of had written over the years and then right around that time; I think it was 2023, I started touring as a backup singer with Abby Posner and she and I went out on the road a lot together. I was seeing all kinds of new artists and new folks and performing in many different places and I felt like there was a resurgence, like a blossoming in my music and I felt really inspired to write. So, this new album is largely songs that I wrote while I was on the road with her. I was also doing several songwriting groups where we'd be writing for 10 week periods at a time every week and coming up with a song; sometimes doing co-writes with other folks in the group. I just think that I grew a lot as a songwriter and a musician and this album is sort of a culmination of that. The reason why I chose "A Bird on the Wing" as the title track is because I feel like it is representative of me really stretching my wings for the first time as a solo artist and showing that expression of what that is to me."
 
"A Bird on the Wing" has taken the better part of this current year to record and finalize; was October 2 a significant date in its release? "Not really," says Paula.
"It made sense timing wise. We recorded the album in kind of two phases; one part of it was done as a live performance recording at a studio in Atwater Village called Swan Dive Sound and the other part I did with my producer Justin Sinclair at Bell Choir Studios this past January. We had again, two main sessions where people were live in the room recording but it was definitely studio recording, it wasn't like a performance type of situation like the first one was." 
 
Songwriters can grasp inspiration from varying sources, some write only a certain time of day while others wake from a sound sleep while still others can be out in everyday life and have a lyric or melody accost their thoughts; Fong says, it's all that plus. 
"That's so funny," she chuckled, "I do feel like it's kind of a bit of all of the above. It's maybe not the constant everyday writing like some folks do; actually, my previous partner Tom Kel was like that. He'd wake up at 10 o'clock every morning and sit down with a piece of paper and write. I find myself going more in phases, I definitely wake up in the night and jot down things on my phone or I'll be moving through my day and be on the freeway and have to turn on the voice recorder to catch some sort of melody that's coming through. I do find that I write a lot when I'm traveling on tour. I just think that you get exposed to so much music while you're out there on the road that it can be inspiring. I'd say I'm on the road somewhat almost every month or some portion of every month. I go out, typically maximum at full length time would be two weeks on the road or we'll do some smaller stretches of two or three days. We've done up to a month on the road and that was a little bit long but yeah. I have plans for getting out and touring more throughout the year with this album. So, just getting out there as much as I can and playing it for new folks. I've been playing a lot in the Pacific Northwest and I did a couple of shows in Europe this past Spring and I'm hoping to get back there next Summer. So, I'm looking at expanding on the West Coast, possibly into the Midwest, maybe the South."

The musical, written by Conor McPherson, uses reimagined songs by Bob Dylan to create a moving American story of resilience in uncertain times. Directed by Terrence J. Nolen, Girl from the North Country brings together a cast of 13 actor-musicians who also serve as the show's orchestra. The story unfolds on the F. Otto Haas Stage beginning September 24, with opening night on September 30, and performances running through October 25.
