New Jersey-raised, now Nashville-based singer-songwriter Sean Tobin will independently release his sixth album, Banshee River, on October 23, 2026, accompanied by a run of solo tour dates across the East Coast and Appalachia.
Recorded alone in Tobin's Nashville home using a four-track cassette recorder and a single microphone, Banshee River is a ten-song heartbreak record about grief, reckoning, and the alchemy of turning loss into beauty.
Each song was performed solo and captured in a single take. Tobin mixed the record himself before sending it to Tim Pannella (Ray LaMontagne, Brian Fallon, The Bouncing Souls) for mastering.
The minimalist recording setup wasn't merely an exercise in nostalgia, nor an attempt to manufacture a lo-fi aesthetic—at least not entirely. The process was written into the album before Tobin ever pressed record.
Alongside the album, Tobin wrote an unpublished fiction novel also titled Banshee River, in which its protagonist writes the songs heard on the record. By the end of the story, the character records them himself on a Tascam tape machine inside a beach house in Ocean Grove, New Jersey.
Tobin decided the real record should exist the same way.
"That's how I envisioned these songs," Tobin says. "Not to spoil the story, but he ends up recording them to a Tascam in a beach house in Ocean Grove. I guess a duplex in Nashville had to suffice for reality."
The result intentionally blurs the boundary between the fictional record and the real one. Rather than simply accompanying the novel, Banshee River exists as something resembling an artifact from within it: ten intimate performances captured with little distance between the songs as they were written and the way listeners ultimately hear them.
That relationship also informed an unconventional release strategy: there are no advance singles from Banshee River.
The album is structured as a complete narrative, and Tobin chose to release all ten songs simultaneously rather than pull individual tracks out of context. "Rockwell" functions as the story's rising action, "Marble" as its climax, and the title track as its conclusion—but the intention is for the record to be heard from beginning to end.
"It's a heartbreak record—hopefully the only one I'll ever make," Tobin laughs. "It's about grief, reckoning, and making good out of [redacted] situations. These songs need to be heard together."
Raised on the Jersey Shore and now based in Nashville, Tobin has spent the past decade building his audience independently through a combination of relentless touring and narrative-driven songwriting. He currently reaches approximately 40,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, with multiple songs approaching or surpassing one million streams. His touring history includes appearances at SXSW, AmericanaFest, North2Shore, and Frank Turner's Lost Evenings, as well as shows alongside artists including Jason Isbell, Rhett Miller, and Chase Rice.
Banshee River also arrives at a significant moment for Tobin's independent career.
In August, 88 supporters pledged more than $15,700 in 28 days to successfully fund the recording of Tobin's seventh album, a forthcoming full-band project. The campaign reached its goal without label backing, providing a tangible measure of the audience that has formed around Tobin's work as he prepares to release one of his most solitary records.
If that forthcoming album represents what comes next, Banshee River documents what had to happen first.
A solo tour supporting the album begins three days before its release and continues through November, eventually bringing Tobin back to his native New Jersey.
