Bloodlines, genetics, close ties, call them what you will but it is rare that you find all of these things and more working together cohesively as a unit in the entertainment industry; until now.
Bands come and bands go, especially cover bands who seemingly work tirelessly to craft a long setlist, rehearse endlessly and once they achieve success, seem to splinter or more often than not, fall apart. Sure, there are those that have withstood member changes, musical shifts, ego clashes and things that tend to drive wedges between friends and/or lead to a band's demise but there are others, true professionals who realize that it's the music that has brought them together and it's the music that keeps them focused and united and then, there is Exit 102.
Recently, guitarist Larry Adelman and former WWF alumni and drummer Craig Lopasulto aka "Legendary Lifeguard" discussed Exit 102's formation, roots, goals and more as they prepare for a very busy end of Summer and Fall season.
"The band came together in March of 2025, that's when we started rehearsing with our core members," began Adelman. "Our first gig was in June of last year at The Colts Neck Inn and guest members who sat in to help us get started were, Joe Bonanno and Rick Cyr; who has played with everybody from B.B. King to Chuck Berry and Bruce Springsteen and currently plays sax with Pat Roddy amongst others. The band came together because Craig's brother Jeff Kinder was Jon Bon Jovi's drummer in a band called Atlantic City Expressway back in the late '70s and one gig they played at the Fast Lane in Asbury Park, Craig was snuck in through the back door because he was only 17 and the first song the band did that night was "Promised Land" and the next thing you know, Bruce Springsteen is coming up out of the audience to sing it! Jeff died 15 years ago of brain cancer and this band is a tribute to Jeff Kinder."
"I tried to put together a band, as I said to Larry from the start, with guys that I'd have over to my home for a barbeque," continued Lopasulto. "I was looking for just good, nice guys and of course, guys who wanted to play what I wanted to play and Larry fit that mold to a tee. My vision was to do what Atlantic City Expressway did and like we say, it's not about nostalgia, it's about continuation. I look at the Expressway as the ultimate Jersey Shore band. I don't know if you remember them but they were incredible. I remember reading an article in The Aquarian, I don't know if that's even still around anymore and it said, "Move over Jukes, the Expressway is here." The horn section was incredible, it had Rick Cyr and a guy named Al Cheznovitz or Al Chez and you'll see him with everybody from Diana Ross to Billy Joel. I wanted a band that played the same music and continued what the real Jersey Shore circuit was; back then you had the Expressway, you had Holme, Beaver Brown and Sam the Band, they were the big bands. I wanted to be what the Expressway was in memory of my brother and without Larry that never would've happened so, that's kind of how the band got started."
"Nostalgia?" Just that in itself proves that these guys are different. Most cover bands or today's tribute acts are started because "OF" nostalgia and a desire to keep someone's teenaged soundtrack alive and rocking but to admittedly do so to honor and continue instead of to imitate is special. So, what is their base of operations and how do they go about distinguishing the difference between nostalgia and continuation?
"We're from all over the place but we say we're from the Jersey shore, if we narrow it down, we say we're from Asbury Park; hence, Exit 102" laughed Lopasulto. "We try to play what people want to dance, have fun and sing along with; you can take all of the best players in the world, put them together and if they just stand there and play, yeah it's great, especially if you appreciate music but if you're a regular Joe, you want to have fun when you go to see someone. Again, I wanted to do what the Expressway did and make everyone part of the show and once again, Larry is the epitome of doing that, he's our Bon Jovi."
One of the hardest things to do is not only assemble the right pieces musically but to make sure those pieces mesh. According to both Craig and Larry, this has never been an issue, everyone gets along and is on the same page.
"What really works for us are the guys in the band; everybody brings something different, it's really wild and everybody gets along," explained Lopasulto.
"Our sax player is Tony Paccione, he came down through the bloodline of Blood, Sweat & Tears, I believe his Godfather was one of their horn players," added Adelman. "We have Charlie Michael, he was a student at Lakehouse Music Academy and he is 18 years old. He was in a band with a close friend of mine's son and he saw the ad we had for a keyboard player and three hours later he was in the studio with us and we're looking at him; "Do you really want to play with guys like us? We're old enough to be your grandparents (Laughs)" and he is living proof that music bridges the age gaps. Charlie is my foil on stage, he brings the pop sensibility, he's an amazing keyboard player, he's a phenom and you're gonna know who he is long after this band is gone."
I told Charlie that I'd love to have him in the band but that I wanted to meet his parents because I wanted his parents to know who we are and that there are no drugs, women, no drinking or any of that." offered Lopasulto. "We are kind of like his surrogate uncles, it's funny but it's a great thing."
"I'm the lead singer and I share lead guitar duties but I'm the one who engages the audience," interjected Adelman, "We have Randy Powers on bass and Randy is an old metal bass player and it's really funny how he's metal, Tony is R&B, Charlie is pop, Larry and I bring the Jersey and Keith Giliberti is kind of a '90s guitar player and they've all learned the genre of what we're doing and embraced it," said Lopasulto.
Despite each of their individual years of experience, the band is relatively new to the Jersey Shore circuit; do they find it difficult to get gigs or do they come easy? Apparently, it's a bit of both.
"We've kind of become the house band for Tim Kerwin's Tavern in Middlesex and Mike Kestin of Municipal Event Services, they've opened a lot of doors for us," quickly stated Adelman. "We've played a lot of festivals, we're playing and headlining Asbury Park Seafood & Barbeque Festival in Bradley Park on August 29, we've got something on Labor Day weekend that we're waiting on the paperwork to confirm, we've got the Halloween Festival in Asbury in late October and Bar A with Mike's connections. Mike and Tim Kerwin have really opened a lot of doors for us which has led to us being named at the beginning of the year by 105.7 The Hawk one of the top cover bands in the state."
"Yeah we were voted number five by their listeners and that blew me away, it really did," added an obviously pleased yet humbled Lopasulto. "Every time we go out and play, we're still proving ourselves. You have bands out there like Joe Bonanno & the Godsons of Soul and Eddie Testa that have been around forever so just their name alone gets them gigs. We've had to work really hard to get every gig we've gotten. We've played a lot of free benefit shows and some really tiny places to start and we've started to make a name and I said to Larry, "They'll be calling us" and lo and behold Jacque Higgins from Chefs International called us and so we are doing work through her but just to go out and walk in and get a gig isn't easy. There are two places that shun us because we don't want to play the game of selling tickets or buying wristbands and the whole bit, we're too old for that."
Based on their upcoming workload, those "Tiny places" are a thing of the past; well, at least for now.
"August 15 we are at Tim Kerwin's, August 21 we're at Moore's Tavern in Freehold, August 22 at The Cabin in Freehold, August 23 at River Rock in Brick, then we are back at The Lazy Moose on Friday August 28 and on August 29 is the headline spot at Seafood & Barbeque Festival in Bradley Park next to the Wonder Bar. The following weekend, September 4 we're at Belmar Plaza, September 5 we are in Atlantic City at The Beer Hall and Friday September 18 we are at Bar A. So, we have an awful lot coming up and an awful lot to be thankful for," said Lopasulto.
Exit 102 is not only the band name but a recognizable off-ramp which also plays into the band's plans as it actually offers a bit of nostalgia for Lopasulto.
" Do you remember the Fast Lane? Every Wednesday night Expressway played the Fast Lane, I'd get my buddy and we'd drive down the Parkway, get off at Exit 102 and go straight down to the Fast Lane and when I was looking for a name I was like, oh man, Exit 102 and it worked (Laughs). Our other guitar player Keith made the logo and I've got to say, it's an awesome logo and for branding, it's wonderful, we've gotten really fortunate with that."
When speaking with both Adelman and Lopasulto, heir enthusiasm is infectious and at this stage of their musical careers that enthusiasm also offers clarity, respect for the roads taken to get where they are and the seemingly never ending desire to bring their talents, music and appreciation for those who came before them fresh in the minds of their audiences, even if it took more than a decade to happen.
"After I had come from the WWF; I was the "Legendary Lifeguard" and once I retired and went to work. then when my brother died is when all of this came about in my mind but it took 15 years to get it done," said Craig, "I've even written a book called "Exit 102 A Jersey Brotherhood" and that's about the band and myself and my brother and how everything came full circle."
