Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites... 07/02/2026

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 07/02/2026

Overheard conversation today, July 2, 2026:

Man #1: You don't want to really drink the water from here, do You? It comes from a garden hose."

Man #2: "Why not? I grew up drinking from a garden hose and I've lived this long."

Man #1: "Me too, I guess you're right; let's go get a beer now that we are done."

Thinking back to backyard barbeques, above ground pools, running through sprinklers, ice pops and "Popsicles," (Personal favorite was root beer or cherry, mostly root beer), smell of lighter fluid and burning charcoal, the sound of quoits or horseshoes clanging off their respective hubs, neighborhood kids lighting off firecrackers even though it was 2 p.m., these were the sights and sounds for those of us who drank from, "The garden hose," who had to be home when the street lights came on and "Always" had a family or family member who had a fourth of July picnic.

There were hamburgers, hot dogs, maybe some sort of sausage (Loeffler's Summer Sausage was the preferred of my mom and sister, Risoldi's Thriftway homemade ring sausage with fennel for this guy and dad) and if you were real lucky, someone brought applewood, rye bread, chopped peppers, onions and a slab of bacon fat or pork belly and made "Dirty bread." An ethnic treat that entailed heating the bacon or belly over the burning applewood and allowing it to drip over the peppers and onions that were heaped high on a slice of delicious rye.

The constants at these events? Food, drink, family and music. This was where you saw those cousins you didn't get to see as often as the one you were closer to, this was where, by the end of the afternoon there was that one drunk relative wearing a crocheted beer can bucket hat dancing with a woman who merely appeased him for perhaps 30 seconds or maybe there was that in-law or younger uncle showing the awestruck kids how to light an M-80 with the tip of a cigarette as he tossed it in the back alley. Regardless of who, what or where it was, that is exactly it, IT WAS. It was the canvas of youth for those of us born in the 1960's, it was trips to the ice house on Swan Street with galvanized tubs to get 25 pound blocks to pick apart and put on top of the beer and soda, followed by a heavy blanket to keep the cold in, it was cutting the grass the day before and spraying the yard with the Raid Fogger the day of to keep the mosquitoes away. You'd burn citronella candles, spray deet on yourself, burn punks from the local water holes that you'd picked earlier hoping they'd be dry enough to burn by that day, there were carbon pellets that became snakes when lit, cap bombs you'd thrown on the ground to scare someone and of course, sparklers.

Throughout the day, there'd be music, lots of music. There was always an AM/FM radio propped up in a corner or on a table near the table where the elders were playing cards or some dice game us youngsters had no clue about and as the dusk approached, the music changed. AM radio always had a variety; Seals & Crofts "Summer Breeze," "Jim Croce "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," followed by Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin, then Three Dog Night

Those days, the grandparents were in their 50s and 60s, wanting to hear big band music, us kids loved hearing The Monkees and all the variety of AM radio, our parents who were in their 20s and 30s and caught between Elvis, The Everly Brothers, The Platters and the new "Woodstock" generation (Darn those Beatles and Ed Sullivan allowing those British Invaders) but despite the differences in taste, music brought us together. Older girl cousins, big sister or brother carrying "The baby" around so mom could get a five minute break to eat, smoke or talk, acting years beyond their age because they were entrusted with the "Little one" and music was all part of it. Music filled the voids, the lulls in conversation, the patio dance halls and the hearts of all in attendance. Music was the great common denominator. Transcending race, color, language barriers and drunk relatives, music has always united and never divided, brought us closer, transported us to the past and evoked memories of firsts, lasts, passed away, present, happy and joyous times as well as sad. Music doesn't discriminate, lie, cheat or leave; it is always there even if you need to make your own, it is a constant, a crutch, a reminder of our youth, past family, future hopes and good times. So, when you get together with your family or friends this weekend to celebrate the greatest country on earth, remember to sing, dance, smile and be grateful for the ones you have left who surround us with love and purpose and oh yeah remember to Rock On!

That's it for this week! Please continue to support live and original music and until next week....ROCK ON!
