Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites... 06/25/2026

By Danny Coleman

There are differences and then there is different and as it may have been written before when Dave Vargo records are reviewed; the differences are few but this time around, something is definitely "Different."

One of the things that this reviewer and space passionately likes about Vargo's work is his ability to have a certain style without sounding, "The same."

Vargo resisted doing his own music for the longest time but with his recent release of "Ghost Towns" he has not only added to his suddenly growing catalog but he has done so with an effort that not only keeps that Dave Vargo style intact but adds a few different twists, making this perhaps his best offering to date.

Right off the get go, "Anything At All" grabs ones attention with rhythmic staccato guitar and Vargo somewhat growling the first verse which then gives way to that big sound his fan base has become accustomed to; a pattern that repeats itself over and over with a guitar interlude and a quick hit of studio magic thrown in for good measure. All in all, a great opening track and one that lets us know this album is "Different."

"Ghost Towns," the title track, is slotted second and totally different (There's that word again) from the opener. Lively and fast paced with this fantastic bright sound, it drives with a cadence of a freight train gathering momentum but yet, the lyrical message is far from moving forward, "Those same old empty roads, lead you back to your ghost town." There is definitely a "You can run but you can't hide because eventually you wind up facing back where you started" message here but hey, maybe each listener will take away something else, that's the beauty of art, right?

Just like this entire body of work, "A New Life" is exactly what Dave seems to have gotten from this release. Track three is a total contrast to one and two and further shows his versatility as an artist, something he may have been afraid to unveil for reasons unknown on his other albums but a very welcome breath of fresh air here as he has really taken a less soft approach with "Ghost Towns" as he lets us see his blue jeans and work boots side.

"No Second Guessing" is a retrospect to vintage Vargo and a great transition into yet again another sound unheard of on any of his prior works. "Let It Go" is a somewhat haunting track, one that would be perfect for a movie scene where someone is trying to escape their past or flee a relationship.

"Tales To Tell," OK, this one has Tom Petty written all over it; "Last Dance with Mary Jane" anyone? Even though the pattern is eerily similar, it still is a departure for Dave as he rocks this song from start to finish; it has a neat guitar solo also.

"Not So Young" shows that letting your drummer use simple downbeats behind a well-produced wall of guitar chords can work. The beauty of this track is its simplicity even though it sounds so full; a testament to his engineer and one that proves "Less is more."

"Hard" is more retro Vargo but if one listens to this in chronological order like we did back in the "Good 'ol days," they will see that it's as if he's setting us up. Like he's saying, "Look at all my new stuff, I'll just slip something that sounds like my past in here then hit you with something new again," which he does with the next track, "Those Little Things." which is a nice segue to "But I Do," a tune that begins the journey towards the end of this 12 track glorious piece of work.

"Promises" has Jackson Browne overtones, whether done intentionally or not, it works and works well. "You must be somebody's baby...."

"Where It Started" sees Dave revisit those similar staccato chords from the opening track and the huge wall of sound that allows this record to breathe all while it seems to grab us by the collar and say, "Listen to me!"

"Ghost Towns" is a fabulous curve in a road that brought prior successes. Vargo's willingness to take a chance and deviate from previous safe spaces has awarded him with huge dividends and this record is proof that you should never be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.
