Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites... 05/15/2026

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 05/15/2026

"I'm alright, very good thank you," began musician and author David Marx who has recently released a new book about the rock band XTC titled, "XTC: I Am The Audience" (Sorrento Books).

This current offering from Marx delves into the band with which he shares a hometown and by his own admission was written mostly by fans of the group. He spent the majority of his time editing memories, and/or favorite things about XTC from the people who revered them and assembled them into this current masterwork of stories, memories, interviews and more but before we get into that, let';s find out a bit about the author himself.

"I published a book of my lyrics and poetry in 2022 called, "Lying In The Arms Of Venus De Milo" and that's my first book," he started to explain. "So, this is my second book and I've got other things in the pipeline as well but yeah, this took quite a while, the better part of 10 months. I'm a musician; that's how I ended up in America, because I was fascinated by all things New York. So, I went to live in New York for a number of years; I played and got a brief deal with a label and yeah, I've always played and  I've always written. I guess my main trade as it were is guitar but then I got into bass playing as well. I played standup bass and then banjo; all the strings really. I'm not that great on piano but I can write on piano if that makes sense. I'm a bit ploddy, a bit like Lennon and McCartney, they were a bit ploddy on piano too; although they got fantastic but you can hear the sort of simple stuff and that's my piano playing too but I digress (Laughs)."

"I'm originally from the same town as XTC," he went on, "I can't speak on their behalf but I call it a pretty wretched town in the United Kingdom called Swindon which is basically known for the railways and XTC. and that's it. It's not the greatest of towns, it's kind of like just sort of a blah place and I'm sure that Andy Partridge would agree because he has pretty much said the same things himself. So, that's where I'm from but I left and moved to London, New York, New Jersey; I've also lived in Berlin in Germany; no reflection on Swindon, I was 19 when I left. I think it's good to travel and soak up different atmospheres and cultures."

When asked what drove him to write the book, he answered without hesitation.

"Basically because my teenage years were all in Swindon and I sort of watched them become a band and evolve into the band that they eventually became. I don't know how much you know about XTC but they stopped playing live in 1982. So, part of the reason I wrote the book is because I saw them so many times in their hometown of Swindon which was like seeing the Beatles at The Cavern. I saw XTC playing to three people and all three were the girlfriends of the band, there was no one there, it was freezing cold. The point I'm making is, I was there in the formative years and I kind of reflect on that a bit but I do have to point out that most of the book wasn't written by me, it was written by fans from all over the world. Idaho to Tokyo, Birmingham to Pittsburgh; it's basically people from all over the world recollecting their thoughts and memories of having seen them or in many cases having not seen them. So, it's quite anecdotal. People would say, "What should I write about?" I would say, "You can write about anything you like, a favorite track, having seen them, having met them, anything." So, that's what they did, I basically edited it and put the book together. Obviously, there's some of my writing in there, I'd say about 15 to 20 percent is me and the rest of it is written by people from all around the world.

I interviewed Andy Partridge whilst I was still living in London and the interview I did was about an hour-and-a-half maybe two-hours at his house and I think maybe five minutes of it was printed. So, I've got this interview kicking around that I conducted many years ago and in 2015 when they were no longer in existence because they split up in 2006, I interviewed the guitarist Dave Gregory for a radio show of all things and for some reason the radio show didn't happen and again, I was left with this great stuff so they are both in it along with a lot of other musicians and just, just fans."

With the book out and ready for purchase, what does Marx plan on doing to promote its release? Will there be book tours/signings?

"Sorrento Books as in the Italian city is where you can find it  and if you'd like to get it, the publisher is giving out a 10 percent discount and that code is JERSEY10. The book was published on March 31 and I'll be doing these sorts of things, this interview is my first in the States. There will be a book launch in London and things such as that and more of these interviews.
