Gallery491 presents "Playing with Light and Color"

an exhibition of works by Bruce Rainier

originally published: 02/06/2026

(MONTCLAIR, NJ) -- Gallery491 presents Playing with Light and Color, a vibrant and imaginative exhibition by artist Bruce Rainier, from February 12 to April 24, 2026. In an age when technology evolves at astonishing speed—and when most of us carry the power of a studio in our pockets—Rainier embraces these tools with curiosity and joy. His work seamlessly blends photography with digital processes, creating images that honor two of art's timeless foundations: light and color.

But Rainier doesn't stop at the digital realm. Each piece is printed, cut, layered, and sculpted into a three-dimensional collage, transforming the image into an art object. These works hover between dimensions, playing with space, shadow, and illusion. Rainier delights in tricking the eye: flat images appear sculptural, while layered compositions cast real shadows that become part of the artwork itself.

The influences are instantly familiar—abstract surrealism, a dash of psychedelia, and a generous sense of play. In a world that often feels heavy, Rainier's work offers a lift: colorful, imaginative pieces that invite viewers into a brighter, more whimsical visual experience.

Some images begin with recognizable subjects—flowers appear throughout his work—while others dissolve into unidentifiable forms through continuous layering and color manipulation. Many compositions feel theatrically lit, as if illuminated from multiple directions on a stage, enhancing their dimensionality.

Rainier brings a rich and varied background to his artistic practice. A graduate of Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, he has spent the last forty years as an Exhibit Preparator and Designer in museums across the country. This lifelong engagement with artwork and artifacts continually informs his visual language. His current role at the Montclair Art Museum, just down the street from Gallery491, also inspires his pieces—one work in this exhibition began as a photograph of his own worktable, later transformed through layering, color, and digital re-shaping into something entirely new.
