Gallery Jupiter presents "Madeleine Shaw: Surrealist Landscapes"

originally published: 04/15/2025

(LITTLE SILVER, NJ) -- Gallery Jupiter presents "Madeleine Shaw: Surrealist Landscapes," an exhibition of Ms. Shaw's mixed-media contemporary landscapes. The exhibition will open on Thursday, May 1, 2025 from 5:00pm to 7:30pm. It runs until June 7, 2025.

Madeleine Shaw’s landscapes depict primeval and intense environments with abundant natural flora. Fantastical and surreal elements abound, constricted only by Madeleine’s unconscious mind. Logic does not dictate the works. Flowers and animals appear in unexpected places. Mountains can float in the sky. Forms are suggested but not clearly defined.

They are edge-to-edge compositions filled with a variety of techniques. Textile elements from Madeline’s quilting work are playfully incorporated, and sgraffito and crackling are used freely to enhance the textural quality of the work. Close-up viewing may be the most rewarding experience.

Ms. Shaw majored in Art and Art History at the High School of Music and Art in New York City and Queens College (C.U.N.Y.). After college, she pursued private art studies while living in Jerusalem and Bologna, Italy. She also studied with Chinese expressionist Dorothy Yung.

Madeleine’s works are created with acrylic paint, fabric, sumi ink, and appropriated images, all mounted on Bristol board.
