Governor Murphy Proclaims March as Arts in Our Schools Month: Celebrating the Transformative Power of the Arts in Challenging Times

originally published: 03/12/2025

(BURLINGTON, NJ) -- In a powerful affirmation of the importance of arts education, Governor Murphy has officially proclaimed March as Arts in Our Schools Month in New Jersey. This month-long celebration, championed by Arts Ed NJ, highlights the profound impact that the arts have on students.

In the proclamation from Governor Murphy, it states, "Arts education in New Jersey includes dance, music, theater, visual arts, and media arts, each with unique knowledge and skills. The arts are vital for a well-rounded education, equipping students with essential skills for school, career, and life. They foster critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration, which are crucial for success. Participation in the arts boosts academic achievement, attendance, and student engagement. The arts are key to young people's well-being, enhancing self-expression, cultural understanding, and personal growth. New Jersey is committed to providing comprehensive arts education for all students."

This March, Arts Ed NJ is “Always Ready” with a statewide coalition of partners to support the field with guidance, Town Halls, resources, and professional learning during these changing conditions.

As we celebrate Arts in Our Schools Month, let us remember that the value of arts education extends far beyond this month—it is essential every single day of the year. Art has always thrived amidst challenges, continuously reshaping and reimagining our world. Investing in arts education equips young individuals with the creative thinking, adaptability, and perseverance necessary to navigate an ever-evolving landscape.

“We know arts education has the power to transform lives,” said Arts Ed NJ Executive Director Wendy Liscow. “Let’s all March Together to ensure every young person has the opportunity to participate in all arts disciplines at school. With strong arts education that incorporates culturally responsive, healing-centered, and SEL-informed practices, our next generation will build an innovative and creative future for our state.”
