Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum Celebrates 8 Years with End-of-Year Appeal to Raise $80K

originally published: 12/02/2024

(SKILLMAN, NJ) -- The Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum (SSAAM) has announced an End-of-Year Campaign, which aims to raise $80,000 to celebrate 8 successful years of working towards their mission.

Adding to SSAAM’s cause for celebration at the end of 2024, is a very generous dollar-for-dollar match to funds raised during the end-of-year campaign donated by a steadfast believer in their organization’s mission. Donate now during this campaign to make the most of these matching dollars.

In addition, this month SSAAM celebrates the 125th anniversary of the museum's home, the State and National Historic Register-listed Mt. Zion AME Church in Skillman, NJ.

To show our appreciation to their supporters, SSAAM will gift Black Yankees jerseys, featuring SSAAM’s logo, to donors of $1000 and above. Donors of $500-$999 will receive a free large canvas tote, also featuring SSAAM’s logo.

The mission of the Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum is to tell the rich local and regional stories of African Americans from the time of the transatlantic slave trade to the present day.

With the support of individual donors, business and organizational partners, local/county/state agencies, and foundational and government grantors, SSAAM has taken great strides in 2024:

* They are increasing their organizational capacity through the hiring of new staff and acquiring the technology necessary to achieve their goals.

* A preservation plan is being developed for the historically African American-owned Reasoner-True House, located adjacent to the Mt. Zion AME Church.

* They are expanding their exhibits and collections to enrich SSAAM’s museum tours and educational programming.

* SSAAM continues to offer outstanding events, open to the community  throughout the year, including Juneteenth, Harvest Home Dinner, Camp Meeting, and “The Head that Wears the Crown” historic hat exhibit and program.

The Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum is located at 189 Hollow Road in Skillman, New Jersey. The museum is open to the public two days per month and for special events. They present exhibits, lectures, and cultural programming throughout the year. Their mission is to foster a broader understanding of the untold parts of American history.
