It seems that Chambers has a knack for finding blues music legends; why not? He is an incredibly talented guitarist who has embraced the blues genre for decades and thus, gained the trust of yet another established artist; Kim Simmonds.
"In 2019, we played a festival called Bowlful of Blues in Newton, Iowa and it was us, Bernard Allison and Savoy Brown and I didn't know any of those guys at the time. I was at the merch table and Pat De Salvo came up to me and introduced himself, I was thrilled to just meet him and then he said, "Kim Simmonds would like to meet you" and I said; "Seriously? Yeah!" He said, "Just sell your merch and in like 10 or 15 minutes I'll come back and take you backstage to meet Kim" and that's what I did. Kim and I talked for like 20 or 25 minutes before he went on stage and we kind of bonded a little bit. I was only gonna stay for like half of their set because we had to get up early and get on the road because we had to drive like six hours the next day but those guys were so freaking good. I was standing on the side of the stage and they were so tight that I stayed for the whole set and then when Kim walked off of the stage he had two guitars in his hands and I said, "Here, let me carry one of those guitars for you. So, he handed me one of his guitars and we went backstage again and he said, "Man, if I'd known you were gonna stay all night, I'd have gotten you up to play one." I said, "Man, I appreciate that but I just enjoyed watching you play" and so I kept in touch. Pat lives in Orlando, Florida and Pat started coming to a lot of my gigs after COVID hit around 2021, 2022 and he and I started talking and then I got Kim's phone number and we talked about five or six times, he gave me some advice and we talked about some stuff. Kim was also an artist and I bought a picture off of him which is hanging on my wall right now. Kim and I were friends but I was really tight with Pat and then I met Garnet Grimm and we are all on Quarto Valley Records. So, when Kim was sick, I had an October 2022 tour in Europe and my band mates had some illnesses in their family and Pat kind of wanted the gig and so I finally asked Garnet and Pat if they would be my rhythm section and so, I took them to Europe and that was our first tour together. We called it, Sean Chambers & Savoy Brown Rhythm Section and Pat and Garnet wanted to come up with a band name but for the time being we just called it that and we did the tour and it struck because we had my fans and followers and the Savoy fans and followers too. So, we just kept it and that's what we're running with now; it has been like two years this October that we have been playing together and Kim gave us his blessing. We talked to him on the phone in Europe before he passed away. We had him on speaker phone before he passed away in December 2022 and he said, "I'm really glad you guys are playing together, you have my blessings; keep the music going" and that's how we bill our shows as Sean Chambers & Savoy Brown Rhythm Section. We play the majority of my material but we do five or six Savoy Brown tunes in the show with a shout-out to Kim. We do "Street Corner Talkin'," "Cobra," we do "Poor Girl," "Hellbound Train" and a couple of others. So, it's not a tribute band but since I'm using the Savoy guys we do Savoy songs."
Blues music can be a tough sell to the masses, often maligned and most times flying under the radar, the Blues isn't easily embraced by promoters and venues but its fans are loyal, appreciative and knowledgeable. Perhaps this is why the artists in this genre perform in "Blues clubs" or "Juke joints" instead of concert halls or arenas on a regular basis or maybe it's because blues music is steeped in history and tradition; something which is not lost on the artist or audience. Chambers is no different, he knows the struggle can be real and sometimes; all you need is a little help from a friend.
"Yeah," he began slowly, "We're a three-piece (Which makes it a bit easier) and before I brought on the Savoy guys, I had a keyboard player but my expenses are a little higher with these guys and they like the three-piece format because that's what they're used to with Kim and to be a three-piece, you need to have the right bass player and drummer and Pat is a monster bass player; he just lays it down, you can feel it under your feet when he plays. Garnet and him were playing together for decades before they even met Kim and as far as I know, they are Kim's longest running rhythm section. Obviously, Kim had several rhythm sections since the '60s when he started but Pat and Garnet were with him for 15 or 16 years."
"So, basically, Arnie Goodman who hooked me up with Quarto Valley Records; I was trying to get a booking agent especially since I'm playing with the Savoy guys, Arnie called me on a Sunday afternoon and he never calls me on a Sunday, it's usually during the week and he said, "Sean, I just talked with this agent Eddie who books big name acts like Martin Barre of Jethro Tull and Steve Winwood, he used to play guitar for Tracy Chapman and books big name acts." So, he books big name acts and he took us on and so what we are gonna do on this tour; we're playing Daryl's House in Pawling, New York and we're doing a live album from Daryl's House and our last show is in May at The Katharine Hepburn Center for the Arts in Old Saybrook, Connecticut and we'll get back and Bryan Bassett from Foghat is on board to mix and master the album. Eddie is trying to get us out there and get the wheels turning; even though I was on the road every summer up until COVID, my last tour was in 2021 because Quarto Valley released my album so this will be my first tour in a couple of years throughout the states. Like Eddie said, even though everybody knows Savoy Brown and my name is somewhat established, we are a new act and everything is different since COVID, people aren't as quick to hire people, a lot of venues have closed down, a lot of people aren't paying as much but Eddie has got us into a lot of great venues. He's got us in the Sellersville Theater, The Tin Pan in Richmond, Daryl's House, The Debonair Music Hall, he's got us in a bunch of cool rooms. He's just trying to get us established, we're gonna release this live album and then probably follow it up with a studio album within 10 to 12 months."
Garnering an interest in music, most times comes at a young age and Chambers knew he wanted to play an instrument and he knew which one and fortunately he had supportive parents; so why the Blues?
"When I was 11 years old, I got my first guitar. My mom and dad said, "You can pick any instrument you want and we'll buy it for you and we'll buy you four lessons, once a week for 30 minutes and the only thing is, you have to do the lessons and you have to practice 30 minutes a night." So I said, "Drums" because I always wanted to be a drummer and my mom said, "Whoa, I don't know if me and your dad thought about drums; let me talk to him about that" and my dad said, "No, I don't want to hear drums banging all night long; pick another instrument," he said with a laugh. "So, I picked guitar and still to this day I'm always tapping on the counter and for some reason the rhythm, the bass and the drums just stick with me but at the time, I didn't know anything about blues. I was listening to the classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin and being from Florida, I liked Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tom Petty, Molly Hatchet, Boston, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and so when I started playing guitar I did those four lessons but the guy was teaching me, "Michael Row The Boat Ashore" and all of this stuff and he'd give me homework to do and like I said, my mom wanted me playing 30 minutes a night to give it a shot and not give up. I would be in my room and I wasn't into my homework and so I'd start noodling around on my guitar and sometimes I'd do something different and wouldn't even play the guitar because it was frustrating and my mom would knock on the door and say, "I don't hear any music coming out of that room" and I'd just noodle around on the guitar and then all of a sudden it clicked and I started to play by ear and I had a cassette tape and I'd listen and learn a bit of it and then I'd rewind and then rewind again and learn and it stuck with me and right at that end of that one month period, I started to learn how to play by ear. I had a buddy who was a year or two older than me, I was 14 and I think he was 16 and he got his driver license and his dad bought him this used green Pinto for his first car and he was like, "Dude, I got my license; wanna go driving around?" He picked me up and put in a cassette tape of Jimi Hendrix and the first song was "Red House" and that was the first time the hair on my arms stood up. I was like; what are we listening to? He said, "This is Jimi Hendrix and it's blues" and from there I knew that was what I wanted to do and it all came together in my head. Then a buddy of mine started playing "Voodoo Chile" by Stevie Ray Vaughn and he said, "Do you know who this is?" I said, "Yeah, it's Hendrix" and he said, "No, it's not" and I started listening to it and I was like holy shit and then I was a big Stevie fan. I started gravitating towards a lot of the Texas players like Freddie King, Albert Collins, Billy Gibbons, Johnny Winter and that was the sound I just liked. I started learning about their influences like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Lightnin' Hopkins, Son House and all of those guys and that's how I learned about the blues."
Sean Chambers & Savoy Brown Rhythm Section "Slide" into Debonair Music Hall for an 8 p.m. show on April 27 with doors opening at 6 p.m. and then again at the intimate Lizzie Rose Music Room on May 10 and Chambers couldn't be more ready.
"We're at Sellersville on May 5 and then we are going to go hang out at Garnet's and do a few shows in Syracuse, NY and then we have May 10 at The Lizzie Rose Music Room; sometimes those smaller rooms are a lot of fun."
