"Circular Turns" as stated, is a two-disc package of songs that Fico felt needed to be heard and as O'Keefe said was, "Len's idea" an idea that Danny was very receptive to when approached and seemingly gets satisfaction from as these songs are finally getting their due.
"Circular Turn," a lot of it is inspired by a piece of art I use that is a metal sculpture by my friend Bruce McDonald which is full of circular turns but there is a play on words involved as well in that this is a re-issue of a lot of songs that were previously recorded that I don't think a lot of people heard. So, the songs are taking another turn around which is kind of what all music does, it turns around and around. There's no brand new material, there may be some songs that were released in some form or another; although there are some that were on an album that my friend Bill Braun and I made in the '90s or early 2000s that didn't get released. So, in a sense, they are new to the audience and the others are from albums that weren't distributed by a major system like Warner Brothers; they were essentially from my website and a couple other places where you could hear them. I didn't have a label other than my own and it was just music that I wanted people to hear if they wanted to search it out."
When one has written songs covered by so many artists, one may think that they may be too busy or have no desire to collaborate with others but not so says O'keefe.
"I don't know how busy I was but I've certainly enjoyed myself," he said with a laugh. "Most of my songs through the '90s were all pretty much my own efforts, my own creations and then I started going to Nashville in the mid-nineties or something like that and the basic methodology there is that you write with one or more of the writers that whatever publishing company you're working with wants to put you with. I had never done that and probably missed some opportunities before that just because I didn't know how to do it. My own writing process was kind of hermetic and I didn't really write with other people. So, I had to learn that process and a lot of it is just sitting down in a room at the publishing company or someone's house and you throw ideas back and forth until you kind of start to have a story. All songs tell stories whether they are simple or complex and the story kind of eventually dictates how the music works. You may have a riff and that riff kind of tells you where that path leads in the song; it's an interesting process."
"Sometimes it's a blessing," he went on, "Because somebody may have a completely different vocabulary or vernacular musically; I don't play keyboards so working with someone who is a keyboardist will often bring different kinds of voicings, different colors and that always influences the mood and the mood tells you kind of how to figure out what the story is; is it a sad story, a happy story, is it funny? All of those kinds of things are what the other person brings."
With a catalog as extensive as his and so many luminaries having recorded his material; is it ever a goosebump moment when he hears one of his compositions on the radio, in a movie, TV show or used in media elsewhere?
"The only time I remember that was quite a few years ago and hearing "Good Time Charlie" as an instrumental being played through the Muzak system in a store that I was in. I mean, it's nice but not a big thrill; it's a much bigger thrill when you hear somebody who has been important to you musically record it like Waylon, Elvis or Allison; a number of people who were and still are people whose careers I've appreciated and to have the honor that they've appreciated something that I've created is always rewarding whenever you hear it."
Now that the album has been released; will there be a tour or series of shows to promote it?
"I don't have any knowledge of that yet," he said with a slight laugh. "That is kind of up to Len and the people at Sunset Boulevard; they'll be the ones figuring that out; if it makes sense, I'll go out there and play some dates. The current COVID situation makes it much harder than it might have been years ago where you'd just jump in your van and go out for six weeks; we don't do that anymore. I mean, it makes more sense financially and it doesn't wear you out; a lot of times on the road if you were going to be out there for six weeks, you weren't really doing much on the early days in the week and there would be either kind of make do gigs or you'd have to stay someplace or keep traveling until you got to the next gig and it didn't make much sense financially and it wore you out which was the biggest piece of it."
When asked what the future holds; he responded with a laugh and a touch of sarcasm.
"Well man, if you have any insight into that, please write me a quick note. I haven't a clue; I write songs and I play guitar and if there are places to go play that make sense, I go and do that but at this stage of the game, it's one day at a time and let's have the best time we can."
