Music at The Barn presents The Matt Chertkoff Trio & Houston Person on Sunday

originally published: 08/23/2023

(HACKENSACK, NJ) -- Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco, the Bergen County Board of Commissioners, and the County’s Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs invite the public to attend a free music concert featuring The Matt Chertkoff Trio and Houston Person on Sunday, August 27, 2023 from 4:00pm – 6:30pm at the Wortendyke Barn Museum, a County Historic Site (13 Pascack Rd, Park Ridge, NJ).

The second performance of the Music at The Barn series will feature The Matt Chertkoff Trio & Houston Person – an act headed by local Bergen County native and jazz guitarist Matt Chertkoff, who has performed or recorded with jazz legends such as David Fathead Newman, Freddy Cole, and Cecil Brooks. One of Matt’s musical interests is in the exploration of traditional Jewish music, blending and reinterpreting the genre with jazz sensibilities to transform and expand old works into new.

Matt’s trio includes Vince Ector on drums and Matthew Parrish on bass. Both are top musicians in the field today and have an impressive history of playing with stellar greats in jazz.

The legendary Houston Person is a musician, bandleader, and promoter with more than 75 albums recorded as a bandleader. He has recorded with Charles Brown, Charles Earland, Lena Horne, Lou Rawls, Horace Silver, Dakota Staton and more. His work with long-time collaborator, Etta Jones holds a revered place in music history.

Please note, seating is limited for all Music at the Barn Concerts so attendees are encouraged to bring chairs/blankets as well as food.

The free outdoor music series will continue on the following dates:

Sunday, September 17 from 4:00pm–6:30pm:  Crash Gordon & Debra Dynamite with Dave Del Monte (Rockabilly)

Sunday, October 29 from 1:00pm–3:30pm: The Cider Barn Band (13th Annual Bluegrass & Cider)

The Wortendyke Barn has been a Pascack Valley landmark since its construction on 500 acres of land bought by the Wortendyke family in 1735.  It was used continually as a barn into the 20th century and is one of only six pure Dutch barn types in Bergen County.  In 1997, the barn opened as a museum with agriculture exhibits that include 18th and 19th century farm implements and tools, and the history of the Wortendyke family farm.
