Dunbar Repertory Company to produce August Wilson's "Jitney" at Middletown Arts Center
 

(MIDDLETOWN, NJ) -- The Middletown Arts Center is pleased to present August Wilson's Jitney, produced by the Dunbar Repertory Company and directed by Darrell Lawrence Willis, Sr., over two weekends, June 2-4 and 9-11. Set in the early 1970s, this richly textured play follows a group of men trying to eke out a living by driving unlicensed cabs, or jitneys, in the black neighborhood of Pittsburgh's Hill District. Jitney is the seventh in the Pulitzer-prize-winning playwright's ten-play cycle (collectively called The American Century Cycle or The Pittsburgh Cycle) on the black experience in twentieth-century America.

Jon Caspi & The First Gun to Celebrate 7" Vinyl Release of "Raise 'Em High!" on Saturday
 

New Jersey punk/americana rock outfit Jon Caspi & The First Gun recently shared the music video for their fan favorite song, "Raise ‘Em High!", featuring Jesse Malin on vocals, and Dez Cadena (known from Black Flag and The Misfits) on guitar. The new version of the single was released late last year alongside a special-made beer of the same name by New Jersey's Alternate Ending Beer Co, which the mayor of Aberdeen, NJ signed a proclamation making it the official beer of Aberdeen Day.

 



WBGO's Kids Jazz Concert Series and The Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation Present the Bobby Sanabria MULTIVERSE Big Band
 

(BRONX, NY) -- The Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation (LAEF) and WBGO’s Kids Jazz Concert Series present the multi-Grammy nominated Bobby Sanabria MULTIVERSE Big Band, featuring Janis Siegel, Antoinette Montague and Jennifer Jade Ledesna, in a Latin jazz tribute to Louis Armstrong in association with Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture at Hostos Community College, 450 Grand Concourse at 149th Street in the Bronx, on Sunday, June 4, 1:00-2:00pm. The concert is free and open to the public. Adults must be accompanied by at least one child. Advance reservations are required via EventBrite.

New Jersey Symphony to Perform Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto
 

(NEWARK, NJ) -- Acclaimed violin virtuoso Randall Goosby is set to solo in the New Jersey Symphony's upcoming performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, June 1—4, led by Music Director Xian Zhang. The program also features the world premiere of Chen Yi's Landscape Impression and Stravinsky's Suite from Pulcinella.

 



State Theatre New Jersey presents Dave Mason
 

(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) -- The fully renovated State Theatre New Jersey presents Dave Mason: Endangered Species Tour 2023 on Wednesday, June 7 at 7:30pm. Opening for Dave Mason is Southern rock group, The Georgia Thunderbolts. Tickets range from $29-$79.

 



Westminster Conservatory at Nassau ends season on May 18 with a recital of music for flute and piano
 

(PRINCETON, NJ) -- The 21st season of Westminster Conservatory at Nassau will conclude on May 18 at 12:15pm with "Outside Inspirations," a recital of music for flute and piano. The performers – John Lane, flute; Kathy Shanklin, piano – are members of the Westminster Conservatory faculty. The recital will take place in the Niles Chapel of Nassau Presbyterian Church, 61 Nassau Street in Princeton. The event is open to the public free of charge; masking is optional.

Mercer County Symphonic Band Presents Free Spring Concert May 17 at Kelsey Theatre
 

(WEST WINDSOR, NJ) -- The Mercer County Symphonic Band will perform a spring concert Wednesday, May 17 at Kelsey Theatre on the Mercer County Community College West Windsor campus. The event is free of charge. For those who cannot attend in person, the concert will also be livestreamed. The concert begins at 7:30pm.

Visual Arts Center of New Jersey Receives Transformational Grant from The Nicholson Foundation
 

(SUMMIT, NJ) -- The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey (VACNJ) has announced that it has received a grant award from The Nicholson Foundation in honor of the Art Center's 90th Anniversary. The transformational $1 million gift will have a lasting impact in funding VACNJ's Arts & Healing initiatives by providing $100,000 a year to programs assisting two vulnerable populations: formerly houseless veterans and houseless or housing-insecure families and incarcerated individuals being held in the Middlesex County Corrections system and those re-entering their communities.

Jersey Shorecast Panel Predicts Bright Summer for Shore Businesses
 

(ATLANTIC CITY, NJ) -- The 2023 summer season looks bright for the Jersey Shore, despite some continuing challenges presented by inflation, gas prices and ongoing labor shortages That's according to a panel of local experts who spoke at the 15th annual Jersey Shorecast on May 10, sponsored by the Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality and Tourism (LIGHT) at the Stockton University School of Business. The discussion was held at the Stockton University Atlantic City John F. Scarpa Academic Center and streamed online.

 



President Obama Names City of Newark a My Brother's Keeper Alliance Model Community
 

(NEWARK, NJ) -- Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka announced that President Barack Obama named Newark as one of four cities nationwide to be designated as a My Brother's Keeper (MBK) Alliance Model Community. Newark was selected from a network of hundreds of cities that have an evidence-based track record of success in positively shifting outcomes for boys and young men of color. Mayor Baraka joined President Obama onstage at an MBK Impact in Action event in Chicago, Illinois to share the city's efforts to reduce violence.

Peters Valley School of Craft: Fresh Perspectives in Fine Craft
 

Nestled in the hills of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, among the sounds of birds, bees, woodpeckers and the breeze in the pine trees, the Peters Valley School of Craft was founded in 1970 in the former town of Bevans, NJ. The town had been purchased by the federal government in 1965 for a flood control project on the upper Delaware, but the project fell through and the lands were transferred to the National Park Service which established the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The school is a wonderful example of adaptive reuse of historic buildings in a modern context.

 



NJ Students and Educators to be Honored at the 2023 Governor's Awards in Arts Education
 

(EWING, NJ) -- Over 100 students and arts educators will receive the state's most prestigious award in the arts education, at the 43rd Annual New Jersey Governor's Awards in Arts Education celebration during Arts Ed NJ Day on June 2 at the College of New Jersey. This event, which begins at 5:00pm, will honor those who have demonstrated excellence in and dedication to arts education.
