"Well, I've had a second child," laughed a very upbeat Dana Fuchs before a recent appearance at The Lizzie Rose Music Room in Tuckerton, NJ. "I've had another baby and I released a new album; It's been a year but we haven't had a chance to tour much behind it because a lot of places are still recovering from the pandemic; so, yeah."
Fuchs, whose straight forward style is as rock 'n' roll as it gets, has not only a new child but a new album, a renewed enthusiasm and is highly motivated to get back at it post-pandemic.
"This is my first time performing in this room so, I hope some people will show up," she laughed. "The new album is called "Borrowed Time" and it's kind of a return to my rock 'n' roll roots; a very Southern Rock type of record and it was a very conscious decision. While writing the demos, I kind of had the Southern Rock idea and we had this producer but it was still during the time of Covid and he's a little older and was a little nervous to have musicians in his studio. Then we found this other guy who was really into what we had and it turned out to be the right move because he immediately heard the demos and said, "This is a Southern Rock album" and he got it and that's where and with whom we went."
"It's 12 tracks," she continued, "I always look back in retrospect when I write but it's also just a reminder that life is short and here we are, we've gotta make the best of it. Enough of the fighting and deep wounds; we're all on borrowed time. Initially, I wanted to have the picture that's on the backcover of the album; that's me sitting on the train tracks in Michigan where we made the record. I was going to have a train superimposed behind me but the record label thought it was too dark so that didn't happen. You know, essentially; I really just took some time off and did some studying and just kind of got my awareness out into the world a bit and that's really what the album is; a collection of stories from around the world including my own of course. So, there's always a piece of me in there but essentially the underlying message is, come on, let's stop all this fighting, all this hate; life is too short"
Along those lines, having a child in today's world is not only a challenge but also downright scary; how does this recent addition to the family affect her touring schedule and more importantly her music?
" You know it makes everything; having a child makes you so much more attuned to what's going on in the world around you; for better and for worse. I think it deepened me, certainly as a human being, it made me a more empathic person. I think that will always creep into my songwriting and like I said, after having my second son in August during the pandemic, I just really took the time while being grounded at home when I was pregnant and having the baby during the height of the pandemic; I just really spent some time learning some things about the world around me and some of the art that I love. Whether it's musical or literature and where that came from and what the stories were; the original stories that inspired it. There's just so much as a parent you get to gain so, I think it's just made me a deeper thinker."
"Definitely not, I don't go out on the road for too long a time now, which is probably a good thing. I think living on the road, I get it and I loved it when I didn't have kids and now I'm being a little more selective and the tour has to make sense so that I can bring them. I think since I had my first son, who is now six; it definitely made the quality of touring better because I got more selective, which ultimately I probably needed to be anyway. When we go to Europe, I take them with me because it's just a lot easier to tour Europe with them and because of the time change, if I keep them on U.S. time and I go on stage at 8 o'clock at night, that's only 2 o'clock in the afternoon to their body so, it's not a stretch. They'll watch the show or play backstage with a babysitter and everybody's happy."
The show at the Lizzie Rose was a "Stripped down" event and something that suits Fuchs just fine but if you ask her; she is more than willing to adapt to any size room.
"Sometimes we do this trio thing, which is what The Lizzie Rose asked for," she explained. "It's Cajon, electric guitar, electric bass, me on vocals or me on vocals and Cajon which is a really fun thing that I started doing. The drums were actually my very first instrument so, it's really been fun to do these stripped down shows where it's still very rock and roll. I've got a tambourine stuck to my foot and I've got drumsticks on a Cajon and the mic. in front of me and I'm having a blast. So, it's me, bass and drums for this show and then for some of the shows, it's bass and guitar and then some stuff we add an organ to the mix. The new album is not so organ heavy, it's really a kind of raw rock record so we haven't been using a ton of organ on the shows to support the new album but I like to mix it up. I like to have bigger shows where I bring my organ player but this time; I've never been to The Lizzie Rose but I'd heard it was a little smaller so they wanted the more pared down band. I love doing those shoes shows too where it becomes very intimate. Every song I've ever written always starts stripped down; you know? I've never written a song yet on all of my albums where it started with a full band. So, it's nice to go back to that and some of the songs have a little more tenderness when you do them this way. Some of them are just more raw and I like it too as a singer and a storyteller because I feel like I can really deliver the story of the song without having to holler over a full band; I just want to slow it down and other times I want that big wall of sound but it's all about the venue. I like when a venue knows, hey, this is gonna be a better set up; It's great."
Fuchs is known for her intense stage performances and potent presence and these days, her act contains some new cover material; perhaps from an unexpected source.
"We usually do about 90 minutes now with maybe a healthy dose of the new album. Honestly, I'II connect with the crowd and let them kind of call that but 90 is close. A few years back, right before the pandemic at a City Winery show, I did a benefit and a tribute to Bob Dylan. I had to do Dylan songs and I did them in this exact context with the same band; me on Cajon, a bass and guitar and I did "It Aint Me" and "Hurricane" and I might throw one of those back in there because I really enjoyed doing those."
