(CAPE MAY, NJ) -- On Monday, September 19, 2022, Cape May Stage presents An Evening with Melissa Errico: A Celebration of Love and Broadway at Robert Shackleton Playhouse. The Tony Award-nominated Broadway star performs some of her favorite love songs & Broadway songs. Showtime is 7:00pm.
The Maria Callas of American musical theater,” as Opera News has called her, referencing both her crystalline voice and dramatic, expressive intensity, and first known for her starring roles on Broadway, including My Fair Lady, High Society and Les Misérables, Melissa Errico also had a close relationship with beloved composer Stephen Sondheim, and her 2018 album Sondheim Sublime (which Sondheim was consulted for) was called by The Wall Street Journal “The best all-Sondheim album ever recorded”.
In 2020, she was featured on PBS in a special Poetry in America in which she sang “Finishing The Hat” and discussed Sondheim and his lyrics, and she will be co-starring in Carnegie Hall’s big Broadway concert this fall on Nov 18 with the New York Pops as the orchestra performs iconic works by Leonard Bernstein, Alan Menken, Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber & more.
In addition to Sondheim, nothing in her work has been more constant than her association with Oscar and Grammy-winning composer Michel Legrand. Having starred in his sole Broadway show, Amour, she went on to collaborate with him on the iconic album Legrand Affair. After his death in 2019, she was asked to write his eulogy by The New York Times and was then invited to be the sole American performer in the extraordinary two-day memorial to Legrand held in April, 2019 at Paris’ Le Grand Rex Theatre. Warner Music/Ghostlight Records recently reissued her symphonic album, which Legrand arranged & conducted, as Legrand Affair (Deluxe Edition).
Melissa also recently released a new album with Warner Music, Out Of The Dark: The Film Noir Project; this masterly-crafted song cycle features all black-velvet piano and vibraphone tones, telling a complete story of hope, despair, and hope renewed. Errico’s song selections (17 in total) reach from noir classics, such as Laura and The Bad and The Beautiful, into the French chansons of the 1950’s and 60’s, all the way to the present with contemporary extensions of the Noir sensibility.
Tickets are available for purchase online. The Robert Shackleton Playhouse is located at 405 Lafayette Street in Cape May, New Jersey.
